Attention NJ Drivers, there is a growing trend in Auto insurance that no insurance agent or company is telling you about until its too late.
When you call an insurance company for a quote, their ultimate goal is to save you money. Lets be real, that's why anyone calls an insurance company unless its for a claim or to change a vehicle on their policy. But what the new agent or company is not telling you is a small change in coverage that you don't even know about, is why you are saving money. But this savings is certainly costly in the long run. Want to know why? Here goes.
There is a portion of your insurance policy that covers your medical bills in case you are involved in an accident and sustain physical injuries. This coverage is called PIP (Personal Injury Protection). In NY they call this No-Fault Coverage. Regardless who is at fault in an accident, your auto carrier will pay for all of your medical treatment when you are involved in an accident. Most people don't know this. In NJ however, you get to choose how much and who will pay your medical bills in case you are involved in an accident. In fact, you can actually elect to have your primary medical insurance pick up the tab for injuries sustained in an accident, it will actually save you money on your auto insurance. BUT THERE IS A CATCH. Most medical insurance companies do not cover you for automobile accidents. Sounds pretty under handed doesn't it? Bet you're asking "So Chris, why do they offer it as an option on my auto policy?" Good question, because medical insurance companies used to cover automobile accidents but most don't anymore because of the high rate of claims. It is the responsibility of the agent or insurance company (GEICO, ALLSTATE, STATEFARM) to advise you or even call your medical insurance provider to see if they can set the PIP coverage to be "Medical As Primary" and guess what? They don't, and you don't know about it either, all you know is they saved you money on your insurance and you are happy about it. In fact, the only time you find out about it is when you are in an accident and receive a letter from your insurance company advising you that none of your medical bills are covered. Tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills. The reality is, an emergency room visit alone, from a car accident, could be up to $10,000 if you chose to take an ambulance to the hospital.
Don't be fooled, if you are calling an insurance company to save on your auto insurance, make sure they are covering you appropriately.
