Established in 1969 and Honduras's largest cooperativa, Sagrada Familia looks forward to working with Inclusiv to create new opportunities connecting the cooperative movement in Honduras with credit unions serving immigrant communities in the U.S.

Although Puerto Rico’s cooperativas are part of the U.S. financial system, differences in regulation, language, and Puerto Rico’s public deposit insurance framework historically prevented them from accessing opportunities available to federally insured credit unions and banks.

Finally, after years of coordinated advocacy by Inclusiv and Cossec the first three cooperativas, Cooperativa Sagrada Familia, Camuy Cooperativa, and Larcoop were admitted to the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York (FHLBNY), expanding affordable housing opportunities to more than 1.2 million members.

Clean Energy Credit Union's "Clean Energy for All" program aims to ensure that the benefits of solar panels, energy-efficient equipment, and electric transportation are available to low-income and working-class communities, protecting them from rising energy costs.

Member Issac Pacheco saw “an immediate reduction in energy bills, and interest from my neighbors about how they could install similar systems.” When it came time to sell his house, Issac also noted that “the solar panels were a major [attraction] for the new buyer.”

We sat down for a Q&A with Michael Cruz, CEO of Seattle Credit Union, a Juntos Avanzamos credit union and trusted anchor in the local immigrant community. Cruz describes how his upbringing informs his life mission of financial inclusion:

"In the 1990s, my parents bought a house. A Spanish-speaking loan representative walked them through a process they had never seen before, and someone at that institution approved a file that probably did not look like the other files on the desk that week."

"Financial inclusion is not an abstraction to me. It is a house in Los Angeles and a family that secured a different future because someone sat down and explained the paperwork in their language."

This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the contributions of Native American communities and give special thanks to our Native member credit unions and partners like the Native American Credit Union Coalition for advancing financial inclusion and opportunity across Indian Country.

We also acknowledge that New York City is the unceded ancestral homeland of the Lenape people, the Lenapehoking. Our office sits on Broadway, formerly the Wickquasgeck Trail, a major north-south trading and communication path for the Lenape.
