Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. It is traditionally observed on the second Monday of October, as it celebrates Columbus's voyage and his role in opening up the Americas to European exploration.
However, the holiday is also a time for reflection and discussion about the effect this voyage has had on Indigenous Peoples. Today we should also celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day to honor the history, culture and contributions of Native American communities.
Whether you celebrate Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day, or simply take the time to learn more about the history of this period, it's an opportunity to appreciate the diverse narratives that shape our understanding of the past.
