Still thinking about becoming an art investor? Last Friday, Masterworks members explored the value of art on a private Christie’s tour in NYC, hosted by Post-War and Contemporary Art expert Jack Nelson.

Throughout the tour, Jack shared his insights on many masterpieces going up for auction this fall. Members had the chance to ask questions and learn about works by artists in their portfolio, including Joan Mitchell, Andy Warhol, and Hernan Bas—just to name a few.

Accompanied by Senior Masterworks Acquisitions Associate Sarah Comgeno and Investment Adviser Santi Guiran from Masterworks Advisers, members left with a deeper understanding of how we select art, what makes a painting “great,” and how these choices translate into long-term investment potential.

There was a slew of notable sales across the works offered by the 289 galleries, with many market commentators believing the results show it’s still a buyers market. As uncertainty becomes the flavor of the year, the diversification potential of alternative investments is getting noticed. 👀

A new report shows alternative asset inflows (excl. art) were up in the first quarter of ‘25 for the big four U.S. alt managers; Apollo, Blackstone, Carlyle and KKR. Moody’s reports that in Q1, their aggregate fee-generating AUM was up 4% from the end of 2024, and up 11% YoY. The largest overall driver has been private credit, while Blackstone’s private equity business grew, and KKR saw growth in real assets.

However, heading into the second half of ‘25, Moody’s said that tariff-related uncertainty has “dampened the outlook” for the firms’ M&A deal activity, especially given the weaker growth expectations for both the U.S. and global economies.

Citigroup’s year-end target for the S&P 500 has fluctuated from 6500, to 5800, and back most recently to 6300—all since Dec ‘24. While stocks are currently marching higher than their lows earlier this year, JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon warned that a recession is still a possibility as recently as mid-May, and the S&P has only managed to rise 2% so far this year.

Bloomberg found that, since early April, “the words “uncertain,” “uncertainty” and “uncertainties” have been used roughly 3,100 times during companies’ earnings calls and other events,” the most in 20+ years, including the 2008 financial crisis and the early pandemic in 2020. ⚠️

Globally, the WEF’s Apr. 2025 survey of chief economists found 82% of respondents currently consider global uncertainty very high, and roughly half (44%) don’t see it easing over the next year. As uncertainty still reigns through this month’s improving trading conditions, alternative assets are a growing avenue for diversifying beyond just the typical split of stocks and bonds.

State Street recently found that half of financial advisors are allocating to alt strategies/investments to manage portfolio risk, while 79% “plan to increase their allocation to alternative ETF strategies.” While they may not offer any entry into art investing, Masterworks does. Before the California pools and global acclaim, David Hockney was a young artist in London navigating love and identity. 🌹

Having just opened yesterday, May 21st, “In the Mood for Love: Hockney in London” is the first exhibition to focus exclusively on Hockney’s early years, from his time at the Royal College of Art in the early 1960s to just after graduation. 🎓

Curated by Louis Kasmin, the grandson of Hockney’s first dealer John Kasmin, the show features 15 rarely seen works, many of which have not been exhibited together since the 1960s. 👀

This period reveals a different Hockney from the one his most popular works have shown. These works are even more deeply personal, often exploring his sexuality in a Britain where homosexuality was still criminalized. Paintings like ‘The Cha Cha that was Danced in the Early Hours of 24th March 1961’ and ‘Two Friends [in a Cul de Sac]’ capture a raw emotional range, far different from the sleek Pop iconography that would bring him later fame. ⭐️

With guidance from John Kasmin (now 90 years old), who knew Hockney as a fresh-faced graduate, the exhibit offers an intimate look at an artist forming his identity both on canvas and in life. ‘In the Mood for Love: Hockney in London’ opens on May 21st and runs until July 18th 2025, at the Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert Museum.

While last week in NYC was flush with auctions across the major houses, things were also teeming on the street level at art fairs like Frieze New York. ⭐️

Frieze New York 2025 attracted 25,000+ visitors and coincided with 10+ satellite events across NYC, with the fair generating strong sales from both blue-chip galleries and emerging players. 💪🏼

Leading the headlines: Jeff Koons’s Hulk (Tubas) reportedly sold for over $3 million at Gagosian. White Cube Gallery moved a Tracey Emin painting for $1.59M, two Antony Gormley sculptures for $432K each, and an Etel Adnan for $180K. Hauser & Wirth sold more than 25 works on the fair’s VIP day alone, including new works by Rashid Johnson and Lorna Simpson. 🖼️

Institutional interest stood out: Christine Ay Tjoe’s $280K painting was placed with a museum. Pace sold all six Adam Pendleton paintings ($165K–$425K), and Karma sold vintage works by Gertrude Abercrombie and Richard Mayhew for $350K each. Lorna Simpson’s Vista (2025) and Rashid Johnson’s ‘Soul Painting “The Jungle”’ (2025), both sold for undisclosed sums. 💰

All of this unfolded as Frieze itself faces a strategic shift, having just been acquired for $200M by a group led by Ari Emanuel. Despite the change in ownership, the market’s appetite for fine art remained clear and vibrant.

Can fine art play a meaningful role in a slice of your portfolio? At Masterworks we think it can! Go to the link in our bio or Masterworks.com to easily diversify into blue-chip art. 🎨🔗 (Disclosures in the comments below.)

Spring Auction Week in New York just kicked off on Monday, May 12th, with the first night of sales at Christie’s bringing in $488,947,900. 💰

The sale of Leonard & Louise Riggio: Collected Works, achieved a total of $271,943,100, led by an iconic Mondrian from 1922, as well as René Magritte’s L’empire des lumières (1949) and one of Pablo Picasso’s portraits of Lee Miller (1937). ⭐️

The Mondrian achieved the night’s highest price at $47,560,000. Magritte’s ‘L’empire des lumières’ (1949) and ‘Les droits de l’homme’ (1947-1948), fetched $34,910,000 and $15,935,000. ✨

Afterwards came the 20th Century Evening Sale, which opened with nine works from Anne and Sid Bass’s famous Fort Worth residence. The sales achieved $217,004,800, and the central piece, Mark Rothko’s ‘No. 4 (Two Dominants) [Orange, Plum, Black]’ (1950-1951) hit $37,785,000.

The top lot of the second sale was Monet’s ‘Peupliers au bord de l’Epte, crépuscule’ (1891), which sold for $42,960,000 after almost five minutes of back-and-forth phone bidding, setting a new auction record for the Poplars series.

Female Surrealist artists also did exceptionally well last night; selling for $2,349,000, ‘Endgame’ (1944) set a new world record for Dorothea Tanning, as did ‘the Revelación’ (also titled El relojero) (1955) from Remedios Varo, which sold for $6,221,000. Not all lots achieved similar eye-catching results, but they still demonstrate the demand masterpieces were able to garner.
