The 4% rule is usually used to estimate how much you can withdraw in retirement. It also works in reverse, to estimate how much you need to save.

Multiply the yearly spending your savings will need to cover by 25 (the same as dividing by 4%). If your portfolio needs to provide $40,000 a year, the rough target is about $1 million.

Income from Social Security, a pension, or part-time work reduces the amount your savings must cover, and that can lower the target a lot.

The Rule of 72 doesn’t only apply to savings. It applies to debt too.

A credit card balance at 24% interest can double in about 3 years if it goes unpaid (72 ÷ 24 = 3). That’s why paying down high-interest debt is often one of the best “returns” available.

Try it on your own numbers: your savings rate, your loan rates, your card rates.

A 1% fee sounds small. Over time, it isn’t.

In a hypothetical $100,000 investment earning 7% a year before fees, a fund with a 0.05% expense ratio would grow to about $750,600 over 30 years. The same investment in a fund charging 1.00% would grow to about $574,300. That’s roughly $176,000 less, just from the fee.

Your 401(k) and IRA fund fees are listed as the “expense ratio.” It takes five minutes to look them up.

Is Your 401(k) Match Really Yours?

Your own 401(k) contributions are always 100% yours. Your employer’s match may not be, at least not yet.

Many plans use a vesting schedule, so the match becomes yours over time. Two common types:

• Cliff vesting: you own nothing until a set date (up to 3 years), then 100%.
• Graded vesting: you own a growing share each year until fully vested (up to 6 years).

Leaving a job before you’re fully vested can mean forfeiting part of the match. Your plan’s Summary Plan Description shows your schedule. Check it before you change jobs, especially if a vesting date is close.

An investment loss may have a role in your year-end tax planning.

In taxable accounts, realized capital losses can offset capital gains. If losses exceed gains, up to $3,000 of net losses may reduce other income each year ($1,500 if married filing separately). Unused losses generally carry forward.

Watch the wash-sale rule: buying substantially identical securities within 30 days before or after a loss sale can disallow the deduction. Purchases in other accounts, including an IRA, can also matter.

Losses inside IRAs and 401(k)s do not qualify for this capital-loss deduction.

Before making a trade, review the tax implications with your tax adviser and consider whether the change fits your investment plan.
