Why is Students' Day celebrated on May 23 in Mexico?
Prior to 1929, the University of Mexico was not autonomous from the Government to make its own decisions (for example, it was not independent to choose its own Headmaster). No decisions were made without the interference of the Mexican President. The situation got worst, until on May 23 there was a strong students' protest. It was a violent and bloody fight between demonstrators and firefighters and police. As a result, May 23 was declared Students' Day, as a tribute to the wounded students and to those who fought for the autonomy and free decision-making of the Institution. Finally, on May 29 the National University autonomy was achieved.
¿Porqué se celebra hoy el día del estudiante en México?
En los años anteriores a 1929 la Universidad de México no tenía permitido tomar decisiones propias como institución (por ejemplo, elegir a su propio rector) todas las decisiones las tomaba el presidente. La situación se fue intensificando hasta que los estudiantes hicieron una manifestación el 23 de mayo. Se registró violencia contra los manifestantes por parte de bomberos y policías dejando varios heridos. Luego de la lucha, se declaró el 23 de mayo el Día del Estudiante, en conmemoración de los alumnos que fueron heridos y que lucharon por la autonomía y la libre toma de decisiones de la institución. Finalmente, el 29 de mayo se logró la autonomía de la Universidad.
