Invest in US stocks & ETFs from Africa: how to buy stocks online in Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana & South Africa.

We used our dollars as protest. Now we use investing as power.

This video traces Wall Street’s first Black millionaire, Kenya’s first African-owned brokerage and boycotts that proved our dollars were powerful.

📖 THE FULL STORY

In the 1830s, Jeremiah G. Hamilton broke barriers on Wall Street and became America’s first Black millionaire.

Across Africa, stock exchanges emerged from Johannesburg to Nairobi and Accra. After Kenya’s independence, Francis Thuo became the first African to open a stockbrokerage firm there.

When denied equal access, Black communities used spending as resistance. In 1955, Montgomery residents withheld bus fares for 381 days. Later, anti-apartheid activists boycotted South African goods and pushed divestment.

* 1953 — Lilla St. John became the first Black woman to pass the NYSE securities exam.
* 1970 — Joseph L. Searles III became the first Black NYSE member and floor broker.
* 1971 — Travers J. Bell Jr. and Willie L. Daniels founded Daniels & Bell, the first Black-owned NYSE member firm.
* 1973 — Harold Doley became the first African American to buy an NYSE seat and later served as U.S. Ambassador.
