As the last installment of my AAPI highlight for celebrating AAPI Heritage Month, today I'd like to highlight an APPI Woman you may not have heard of, but should know!

Many of you may not know of Susan Ahn Cuddy (1915-2015) who was born in Los Angeles in 1915 to the very first Korean couple who settled in California.

At that time, many Korean immigrants had immigrated to America as many of them were exiled from fighting against the Japanese and their occupation of Korea.

Susan Ahn Cuddy was the first Asian-American woman to join the U.S. Navy after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. She not only trained pilots, but also was a gunnery officer and code breaker.

Despite it being very difficult as a minority woman to have a voice in the military and to the disdain of many of her white male colleagues, she still managed to cross those hurdles and boundaries to rise in military leadership.

She crossed another boundary of in*******al marriage which was frowned upon during that period by marrying Chief Petty Officer Frank Cuddy, an Irish-American in 1947.

Susan Ahn Cuddy is a true Asian-American patriot and was able to overcome the hurdles of the U.S. Navy military as well as crossing the boundaries of anti-miscegenation laws of her time. For that, I applaud her bravery and admire her for her personal stances!

My New Reel is up! It was a cloudy day in the city as I headed off to see a new prospective client at a local coffee shop.

This client was purchasing a Brownstone in Historic Harlem that was to be used as his primary home and then other units in the Brownstone as being rented out to tenants. He was also considering having his business, a yoga studio, in the Brownstone as well.

This brownstone was registered on the local historical registry which means that the home's architectural has historical significance. It often grants access to financial benefits but comes with specific rules for exterior alterations to preserve the historical nature of the building.

As I walk through the city, you'll find new and historical buildings as shown in my reel. I also ran into this cute new Coffee & Tea and Doughnuts shop that I hadn't seen before.

Where do you think I'll be walking to next week? Stayed tuned!

Of the most common injury causes, slips, trips and falls were the most frequent and had the second-highest cost per claim. Thank you to for sharing these staggering Employee Injury Trends in their 2026 Injury Impact Report with us as brokers and to our small and large business clients.

Can you believe that:
- 86 was the average number of days missed due to workplace injuries?
- 46% of employees injured were first year employees?
- 15% of injured employees were age 60+?
- Most common type of injuries were slip, trip and fall claims at 34%?

Travelers report breaks down more than 1.2 million workers compensation claims from 2021 to 2025, so you can see exactly what’s driving injuries across industries right now. The key industries they looked at for these employee injury trends were the following:

☑️ 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - Construction workers compensation claims were among the most expensive, almost doubling the all-industries average.
☑️ 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 - Shoulder injuries were the most frequent and expensive claims for manufacturing employees.
☑️ 𝐖𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞 - Among wholesale employees, lower back injuries were the most common. However, shoulder injuries were a close second and the costliest of the most common industries.
☑️ 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 - Of the most common injury causes, slips, trips and falls were the most frequent and had the second-highest cost per claim.

We all know that Workers Compensation coverage for our employees protection against getting injured on the job is important, but we can also use these claims data to find out what ways business owners can help minimize these risks to help on the productivity of their employees.

Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the military members who gave their lives while serving our country.

It’s also a reminder to slow down, spend time with the people around us, and appreciate the freedoms made possible through their sacrifice.

Today, we remember and reflect with gratitude.

"A lot of America is never going to see me as American." - Kumail Nanjiani, Actor & Comedian.

"Who are you? What is your identity?" - Sandra Oh, Actress.

"My father didn't want us to have that Hmong or Asian accent." - Yia Vang, Chef.

"They throw something at me, I'd throw it right back at them." - Connie Chung, News Anchor and Journalist.

I had the pleasure to watch this HBO Documentary "The A List: 15 Stories from Asian and Pacific Diasporas" directed by Eugene Yi, a Korean-American director and film maker this past week and the 15 stories that spotlighted 15 influential voices across various industries, including entertainment, activism, and politics, truly resonated with me.

From Warner Bros. Discovery:
The film explored the diverse experiences, triumphs, and struggles of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities in America through their own personal stories.

Many of these stories told involved what it means to be "Asian American" or "AAPI" and showcased what it means to these individuals in different Asian communities.

From high profile celebrities like Sandra Oh, Bowen Yang, Kumail Nanjiani, Connie Chung to Activists like Amanda Nguyen & Schuyler Bailar as well as U.S. Senator and military veteran like Tammy Duckworth - it was a tapestry of stories from diverse histories and Asian cultures that highlighted what it means to be Asian American.

The film also highlighted unsung heros like Madelyn Yu, a retired nurse in New Jersey to army-helicopter-pilot-turned-senator Tammy Duckworth; trans advocate and athlete Schuyler Bailar; activist and astronaut Amanda Nguyen; surfer and scientist Cliff Kapono; DJ Rekha, whose underground parties transformed the New York City music scene; and Haroon Mokhtarzada, a child refugee who went on to become a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist.

I highly recommend watching this HBO Original Documentary "The A List: 15 Stories from Asian and Pacific Diasporas" to see these moving stories of different AAPI experiences - to understand their joys and sorrows, triumphs and tragedies to get a clearer understanding of what our communities experience in the US.

As promised, I will be highlighting notable Asian Americans each Friday this AAPI Heritage Month and showcasing their stories and personal experiences here in the US.

As indicated in my earlier posts, when we listen to and amplify AAPI voices and our stories in our communities, we can then show visibility, inclusion, and sustained support. It also creates space for representation in our society and in the US.

For this first Friday, I'd like to highlight Tony Xu, CEO and Co-Founder of because in many ways I find his story to be relatable to my own personal experience in the US as well.

Similar to myself, Tony Xu immigrated to the United States with his family from Nanjing, China at the age of 5. When his family came to America and not knowing much English or with little money as many immigrant families, growing up in the US can be quite a struggle.

Tony grew up in a small apartment in California and he and his family faced financial struggles to even put food on the table. These experiences taught him his values and beliefs just as many Asian immigrant families had: having a strong work ethic, tenacity and of course compassion for others.

His own personal experience watching his mother work multiple jobs, including as a restaurant server, inspired him to create DoorDash in 2013 with his Stanford classmates to support local restaurants and their food delivery efforts.

Under Tony's leadership, DoorDash grew into America’s largest food delivery service, going public in 2020 and expanding into over 30 countries. Tony Xu is a prominent Chinese-American businessman and he also participates with Asian Advocacy groups like Stand With Asian Americans coalition, fighting against anti-Asian hate.

His story and experience is uplifting to many AAPI Communities which is why I wanted to highlight him in AAPI Heritage Month.

Thank you for your continued inspiration to us AAPI in the business community, Tony Xu!

It was great to attend Institute's Risk. Regulation. Resilience. Responsibility symposium where they addressed the availability and affordability of P&C insurance.

As a producer and client advisor in the Commercial Property & Casualty insurance for over 20 years, we have to continuously learn of how things change in the insurance market and properly advise our clients on how these changes affect them and their insurance policies.

I have been to Travelers different symposiums in the past and it is always very well organized and you always learn quite a lot on the insurance marketplace. This one was hosted by Travelers Institute President Joan Kois Woodward and we received a very warm welcome from Regional President Ricky Jones. The Panel of event speakers from Travelers included Rick Keegan, EVP and Chief Underwriting Officer, Richard C. Ives, Brooke Steele (Sassi), and Glenn Westrick.

While climate change and different communities across the country dealing with significant claims and losses stemming from natural disasters was included as one of the reasons for insurance availability and affordability, there were also many other factors that impact the commercial insurance market as well.

Some of these factors include insurance fraud and even specified and cited insurance fraud schemes that occurred in NY and CA. This impacts many kinds of businesses in these areas and getting ahead of these fraud schemes is in everyone's best interest.

Other factors that also impact insurance availability and affordability are inflation, aging infrastructure as well as the high cost of litigation (or tort law) in different states.

At the end of the day and this symposium, we all have to play a continuous part of conversations of risk, availability and affordability of Commercial P&C Insurance - insurance agents like myself, policymakers, brokers, consumers and carriers.

Thank you for another informative symposium, Travelers!
