Is a rise of roughly 1.5 percentage points in rates a big deal? Brian Dunhill, founder of Dunhill Financial, reckons the headline undersells it.

On this month's Macro Aggressions, he walks Richard through how the 10-year Treasury went from around 4.05% last year to above 5.5%, and why that works out as a move of more than 30%. His take, markets don't react, they overreact.

Richard's US driving test lasted about three minutes, and he left the car in reverse halfway through a three-point turn.

In the UK that would have been the end of it. In New York? "You've been driving for years, haven't you? You're fine."

He and James "JB" Beck swap notes on how relaxed American tests are. 😅

Richard asks James "JB" Beck who he's actually meeting on the road, and the answer is a lot of friendly full-timers.

In Greenville, JB found a whole community that hangs out together, right down to watching the NFL on big outdoor projectors.

As the family head south for winter, he reckons there'll be even more of them. 🚐

Have a SIPP? Thinking about getting an NT tax code? Already applied for one and wondering what's going on? 🤔

You're not alone.

Richard shares three recent examples involving British expats and NT tax codes – more of a public service announcement than anything else.

If you're scratching your head over your own situation, this one's worth watching.

UK pensions are complicated enough. Add US tax rules into the mix and things can get seriously confusing. 🇬🇧🇺🇸

Richard Taylor doesn't hold back when discussing just how complicated the UK pension system has become.

James's response?

“I’m not even going to try to defend it.” 😂

The people who get caught out are often the ones paying attention. After 11 years working with British expats in America, Richard has noticed something odd. Plenty of people listen to the podcast, attend the webinars and know the rules, and still have problems sitting in their tax return.

His explanation: it's so complex that the dots don't connect. Talk about non-US investments in ISAs and listeners don't think "hang on, that's me."

If you've got any link back to the UK, accounts, legacy assets, even family, his advice is simple. Get ahead of it, rip the bandaid off, move on.

Please don't get your tax advice from an AI chatbot ⚠️
Richard is seeing more and more British expats rely on AI for answers about their US reporting obligations, sometimes even using it to challenge what a qualified tax adviser has told them.

His verdict: the advice is often flat out wrong, occasionally scarily wrong. And the reason is simple, AI tends to give you the answer you want to hear.
The bit worth remembering: "ChatGPT told me I didn't need to file this" won't get you off the hook.

If you’re a British expat planning for retirement, there’s one question I’d want an answer to pretty early on:

“Where are you actually going to live?” 🌍

Maybe you plan on staying in America or perhaps a move back to the UK is on the cards. Or are you planning an adventure in a whole new country?

It might sound like a lifestyle decision, but it can shape everything from your pensions and investments to tax, healthcare, and retirement income.

You don’t need the next 30 years mapped out, but having a picture of your dream retirement allows you to build a plan that helps you get there. 🤝

"I'm not seeing a bubble."

Richard's verdict on this month's Macro Aggressions, with Kamaljit "Kam" Singh Somal of Dunhill Financial standing in for Brian.

Everyone he speaks to is nervous, and from a distance he understands why. But look closer: the S&P's price-to-earnings ratio is around 18-19 (very normal), earnings growth is spreading beyond the big tech names into banks and utilities, and the companies leading the market are generating cash at levels capital markets have never seen before.

Add in the fact that public sentiment on the economy has been on the floor for five years. Nobody's borrowing money to buy shares. That's not what a bubble looks like.

Bumpy? Probably. But as Richard puts it, make hay while the sun shines.
