You can own five different funds in your portfolio and still have far more overlap than you realize.

This is something we look at all the time.

A couple of ETF index funds, a Nasdaq fund, and a couple of managed funds may look diversified on your statement. But once we review the companies within, the picture can be very different.

You may discover that several of those funds own many of the same companies; meaning your exposure to a handful of names is larger than you thought.

When we review a portfolio, we break it down so you can actually see:
☞ What you own.
☞ Where the overlap is.
☞ Where you may be concentrated.
☞ What each investment is doing for you.

The goal is to make the portfolio make sense—not on your statement, but to YOU.

If no one has ever shown you your investments this way, let's dig in.

How pressure-tested is your business? Try this with me.

Imagine you are completely unavailable for 30 days.

No checking email. No quick texts. No “just call me if you need me.”

What stops?

Which decisions wait for you?

Which clients only want to talk to you?

Which numbers are harder to find than they should be?

Which approvals pile up because no one else really owns them?

That list tells you a lot.

Most business owners I know can name a few things almost immediately. Pricing. Key client issues. Financials. Final reviews.

You don't have to fix all of it at once.

But once you can see where the business still relies on you, you can start moving some of that weight.

And that is how you build a business that can grow without requiring more and more of you.

If every decision in your business ends with you, your team is not really making decisions.

One of the simplest things you can do is create a three-limbed decision tree.

1. What only you decide.
2. What your team can decide within clear limits.
3. What no longer needs approval at all.

For example:

Refunds under a certain amount? Handle it.
Spending within budget? Handle it.
A major pricing change? Bring it to you.

The clearer those boundaries are, the fewer questions come back to your desk.

And your team gets better at actually running the business.

The Broverse and AI? You may all bow to the She-conomy.
💅
The great engine of economic growth over the last 75 years has been the rise of women’s economic participation.

As women entered the workforce, earned more, built businesses, led organizations, and gained more control over household spending and capital, the economy grew with us.

And we are just getting started.

Women now influence enormous amounts of consumer spending, own and build more businesses, hold more wealth, and make more financial decisions than ever before.

The She-conomy is not a side story. No Trad-businesses here.

Not all revenue is equally valuable.

Some service lines are more profitable than others. Some clients are easier to serve, pay well, respect the process, and are genuinely enjoyable to work with.

Take a look at the last 12 months and ask:
☞ Which services produced the strongest margins?
☞ Which clients were the most profitable?
☞ Which relationships took far more time than the revenue justified? (IYKYK)
☞ Which work would you happily do more of?

The answers can change how you price, where you invest, who you hire, and what you decide to stop offering.

Revenue tells you what sold.

Profitability—and experience—tell you what is worth growing.

I had such a wonderful time joining Helen Jonsen for Season 5 of This Kaleidoscope Career!

We covered a lot of ground—from my early days as a market maker on Wall Street to 20 years running my own investment banking firm, three company exits, and the advisory work I love doing today.

And we talked about one of my favorite subjects: the She-conomy!
Women have become an enormous economic force. Our purchasing power, the markets we influence, the businesses we build, and the organizations we lead are changing how business is conducted around the world.

Thank you, Helen, for inviting me and for creating a platform that celebrates the many ways women build successful careers. We love what you're doing!

The fewer people who know you are considering a sale, the more control you keep.

A premature conversation can create uncertainty with employees, customers, vendors, or prospective buyers before there is anything concrete to discuss.

Good preparation includes a clear plan for who knows what, and when.

If a sale is somewhere on your horizon, information management is part of the preparation.

Who knows what about your plans today?

September is harvest season, and harvest is as much about discipline as abundance.

In a portfolio, that discipline is fairly unglamorous. Positions that have grown past the size you intended get trimmed back to the size you intended. Gains get taken on purpose rather than left to the weather. Holdings that no longer earn their place get released without much sentiment.

None of that is pessimism. A gardener who prunes believes in the future of the garden.

The alternative is a portfolio shaped by inertia and by an enthusiasm you had five years ago, rather than by anything you have decided recently.

What in your portfolio has outgrown its original reason? Asking that once each autumn will do more for you than most forecasts.

Let's walk through your portfolio before year end.

If the business only works because you know how it works, it is hard to scale.

Pricing. Client expectations. Approvals. Quality control. How decisions get made.

When those things live only in your head, your team has to keep coming back to you.

Put them where people can see them. Define the process. Make responsibilities clear. Give people enough context to act without guessing.

Growth becomes much easier when the business is transparent enough for other people to understand how it works and take responsibility for their part.

Who are the professionals sitting at your financial table?

The people around your money matter.

Your advisors should feel like partners—people you trust, feel comfortable talking with, and who know how to explain things clearly without talking at you.

Good advisory relationships include a full view of your financial life, honest challenge, and regular engagement—not just crisis response. If that is not how your advisory relationships feel, it may be time to rethink who has a seat at the table.
