HousingPlus

HousingPlus Offering permanent housing with supportive services for women and families experiencing homeless.

For New York's women who are experiencing homelessness, there's almost nowhere to turn for help. HousingPlus provides these under-served women with keys to build lives of their own: We provide housing so they can create real homes, address the traumatic events that may have led to their homelessness, and offer employment services that help them get jobs. This uniquely holistic approach empowers women to achieve personal and financial security for themselves and their families.

According to Johns Hopkins, Black women are less likely to seek help for depression. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. We must continue to do the important work of lessening the stigma around mental healthcare. Experiences with poverty, violence, and trauma disproportionately impact our tenants. HousingPlus will keep working to ensure that all women we serve, especially women of color, seek the help they need.

For years, Marble Collegiate Church has supported the work of HousingPlus, including by providing tangible donations to our community members, such as backpacks for schoolchildren and holiday gifts. So in this context, it was so special that Barbara Gieseler, member of Marble Collegiate Church, had the opportunity to visit our newest permanent supportive housing building at Shepherd Avenue a few weeks ago, and visit with our CEO, Karen Ford. Long-term supporters like Marble are essential to the continued strength of our work as we house and support hundreds of formerly homeless New Yorkers every year.

In partnership with Homes For Veterans, HousingPlus hosted an event for our Veteran participants and tenants. On May 4, these Veteran participants received essential home items and a delicious catered lunch as we celebrated their service. Every day, our community shows us that many want to help and contribute to making the day brighter for individuals in our programs. Our sincerest thanks also to Northwestern Mutual Tri-Harbor Financial, who helped make the event possible.
