As we wrap up our back-to-school educator stories, we're reminded that the moments educators carry with them most aren't always the biggest milestones—they're the small victories that help students discover what's possible.

This story is a reminder that patience, encouragement, and belief can help a student see their own potential in a new way:

“Sometimes the win is staying with it. One that sticks with me is a student who would shut down anytime work felt hard—head down, ‘I can’t do this,’ done for the day. At first, I focused too much on getting the work finished. What actually changed things was backing off that expectation and just focusing on getting him to stay in the room with the task. Some days that meant just starting one problem together. Some days it was just sitting there without leaving. I remember one day he looked at an assignment he usually avoids and said, ‘I can try it if you help me start.’ That was a turning point. We did the first couple together, and he ended up finishing more than he ever had before. It wasn’t a big, flashy moment—but it was the first time he didn’t give up right away. And that’s the part I keep coming back to: sometimes the win is just a student staying with something they used to run from”

The most meaningful moments in education aren't always found in lesson plans or test scores - they're often found in the lives changed along the way.

“Building relationships is key to students' success. If they know you care, they'll do anything to make you happy. As teachers, we are educators, caregivers, counselors, and role models. When you model kindness and respect, you get kindness and respect. I had a student who loved football but hated to read. Knowing this, I found text about football and encouraged him to read it. Not only did he read the text, but we spent time talking about his football passion. I even went and watched him play on Saturdays. Knowing I was one of his biggest fans, he tried hard with every reading assignment even if it wasn't his favorite topic. We built a bond throughout the year. He made huge gains in reading because he felt supported and encouraged.”

Stories like these remind us of the passion, perseverance, and purpose that drive educators every day.

In honor of this season, we're sharing real reflections from teachers about the moments, relationships, and experiences that continue to inspire them every day.

Our first story is a reminder of the lasting impact educators can have beyond the classroom:

“At 27 years old, he still remembers me. One of my favorite moments was years after I had taught a young man in middle school, I came across him at a local diner waiting tables. He told me used the Spanish he learned in my class to be able to travel abroad. He said I was one of his favorite teachers and, mind you, I teach middle school, so I taught this young man when he was 12 years old, at 27 years old he still remembers me and says I made an impact on him. On the really hard days, I try to remember the moments like these when it is truly worth it.”
