Netflix didn't start as a streaming company.
Netflix was founded in 1997, and its website launched in April 1998 as an online DVD rental store. The first DVD shipped by Netflix was Beetlejuice.
Then Netflix changed the business model.
In 1999, it introduced a subscription program that eliminated traditional due dates and late fees.
And in 2007, Netflix began offering instant streaming—while still operating its DVD business
The company eventually phased out DVDs entirely; its final DVD shipments went out in September 2023
💡 Money Lessons
Don't become emotionally attached to your original business model.
Subscription revenue can completely change a business.
Watch technology before it becomes mainstream.
Your biggest competitor might be the business model that made you successful.
If you owned a successful DVD rental company in 2007, would you risk destroying your existing business to bet on streaming?

Jeff Bezos had a good job. He left it anyway.
In 1994, Bezos was working at an investment firm in New York when he became convinced the rapidly growing internet could create a massive business opportunity. He decided to leave his career and build an online bookstore
Amazon was initially operated from his Bellevue, Washington home and launched publicly as an online bookseller in July 1995
The first month was already surprising: Amazon says it shipped books to all 50 U.S. states and 45 countries
And the bigger lesson?
He didn't start by trying to sell everything.
He started with books—then expanded.
💡 Money Lessons
A huge company can start with a very narrow product.
Don't wait until everyone agrees that a trend is real.
Test a big idea with a manageable first market.
Think about where your industry could be 10 years from now, not just today.
Would you leave a comfortable career to bet on a technology you believed would change the world?

At 65, most people are thinking about slowing down. Harland Sanders was starting over.
Sanders began serving chicken at his roadside operation in Kentucky in 1930 and later perfected his pressure-fried chicken recipe
After his restaurant was sold, Sanders took his recipe on the road and began convincing other restaurant owners to serve his chicken.
In 1952, the first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise opened in Salt Lake City with franchisee Pete Harman. KFC says Sanders later traveled around the country looking for more franchisees

💡 Money Lessons
Your age doesn't determine your entrepreneurial potential.
A proven product can be turned into a repeatable system.
Franchising can help a business scale beyond one location.
When one business model fails, look for another way to monetize what you already know.
Would you start a completely new business at 65 if you believed in the idea?

Chip Wilson saw something bigger happening in yoga.
lululemon was founded by Dennis “Chip” Wilson in Vancouver in 1998 after he identified an opportunity in women's athletic apparel, particularly clothing designed for yoga
The first retail space opened inside a local yoga studio in 1998, operating as a design studio by day and yoga studio by night. Its first standalone store opened in Vancouver's Kitsilano neighborhood in 2000.
The company focused heavily on technical apparel, customer feedback and building a community around its stores
💡 Money Lessons
Watch where consumer behavior is heading.
Solve a specific customer problem.
Build a community, not just a product.
Customer feedback can become your competitive advantage.
What trend do you think is still in its early stages today?

She didn't have a fashion degree. She didn't have investors. She had $5,000 and a problem.
In 1998, Sara Blakely wanted a smoother look under white pants. She cut the feet off control-top pantyhose and realized she had created a solution to a problem other women might have too
She spent $5,000 of her own savings developing the product and launched SPANX in 2000, without outside investment
In 2021, Blackstone bought a majority stake in SPANX at a $1.2 billion valuation, while Blakely retained a significant stake
💡 Money Lessons
Start with a problem you personally understand.
You don't need a huge budget to test an idea.
Don't assume you need industry experience before starting.
Solve a specific problem better than existing products.
If you had only $5,000 to start a business, what problem would you solve?

💰 Are you getting the full 401(k) employer match?
If your employer offers a 401(k) match, contributing enough to receive the full match can be an important part of your retirement strategy.
Example:
You contribute $200
➕ Employer contributes $100
= $300 invested in your retirement account
That employer contribution can help you build wealth over time.
⚠️ Every company's matching formula, limits, and vesting rules are different—check your plan details.
📌 Before leaving your 401(k) match on the table, know what your employer offers.

Sometimes the opportunity isn't inventing something new. It's improving an old industry.
Entrepreneur H. Wayne Huizenga became known for building large businesses by taking fragmented, traditional industries and scaling them through disciplined operations and acquisitions.
His automotive venture eventually became AutoNation, one of America's largest automotive retailers.
The bigger lesson is what matters for Real Money Moves:
You don't always need a revolutionary invention.
Sometimes there's money in asking:
"Why is this industry still operating this way?"
💡 Money Lessons
Fragmented industries can create opportunities for consolidation.
Standardized systems make businesses easier to scale.
Acquisitions can accelerate growth.
"Boring" industries can become enormous businesses.
What traditional industry do you think is still unnecessarily complicated?

IKEA didn't start with furniture.
In 1943, Ingvar Kamprad registered IKEA at just 17 years old. His first products included pens, wallets and other small household goods
Furniture entered the business in 1948, and it quickly became IKEA's main focus. The company later developed its famous flat-pack approach after removing the legs from a table to make transportation easier and reduce damage
That wasn't just a furniture innovation.
It was a business-model innovation: reduce transportation costs, let customers handle some of the assembly, and make good-looking furniture more affordable.
💡 Money Lessons
Your first product doesn't have to define your entire company.
Reducing costs can create a powerful competitive advantage.
Look for expensive parts of the customer journey and redesign them.
Sometimes the biggest opportunity isn't the product—it's how you deliver it.
What business would you redesign if your goal was to make it 30% cheaper?

💰 The HSA is more than just a healthcare account.
For people who are eligible, an HSA can offer a powerful triple tax advantage:
1️⃣ Contributions may be tax-deductible
2️⃣ Investments can potentially grow tax-free
3️⃣ Withdrawals for qualified medical expenses can generally be tax-free
That combination can make an HSA a valuable part of a long-term financial strategy.
⚠️ Eligibility and tax rules apply, and state tax treatment can differ.
