Netflix didn't start as a streaming company.
Netflix was founded in 1997, and its website launched in April 1998 as an online DVD rental store. The first DVD shipped by Netflix was Beetlejuice.
Then Netflix changed the business model.
In 1999, it introduced a subscription program that eliminated traditional due dates and late fees.
And in 2007, Netflix began offering instant streaming—while still operating its DVD business
The company eventually phased out DVDs entirely; its final DVD shipments went out in September 2023
💡 Money Lessons
Don't become emotionally attached to your original business model.
Subscription revenue can completely change a business.
Watch technology before it becomes mainstream.
Your biggest competitor might be the business model that made you successful.
If you owned a successful DVD rental company in 2007, would you risk destroying your existing business to bet on streaming?
