Think of building a portfolio like a chef crafting a Michelin-caliber meal. The goal isn’t just to find the gaudiest ingredients (or investments with the highest historical returns), but to combine high-quality components in a recipe where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. In our latest newsletter, we pull back the curtain on our investment selection process, from questioning what a fund's name *really* means to why the standard 1, 5, and 10-year returns can be misleading. What's the most confusing part of picking investments for you? Read the full story at https://targetrockwealth.com/resources/

Ever wonder how a specific fund actually makes it into a portfolio? It’s not about picking the one with the gaudiest historical returns. We see it more like a chef sourcing ingredients for a Michelin-caliber meal. Recently, we decided to re-evaluate our bond alternative funds. Our process started by screening the entire universe of funds, then creating a model that scored each one on rolling returns, volatility, and correlations. But it can't just be quantitative. The scores gave us a short list, and from there we dove into fund documents and set up calls with the managers. The result was a swap into a fund that provided even more diversified, differentiating exposure. It's a process designed to keep us grounded in sensibility, not hype. Think of building a portfolio like a chef crafting a Michelin-caliber meal. A recipe is only as good as its ingredients, and the goal is to create something where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This is why we question the whole 'active versus passive' debate. In our view, it’s a false dichotomy. Every investment decision (even buying a simple index fund) is an active one. In our latest letter, we pull back the curtain on our process for sourcing the 'ingredients' for a portfolio, from analyzing performance with rolling returns to looking for costs beyond the expense ratio. What's one investment rule you've questioned? Read more at https://targetrockwealth.com/resources/

Ever wonder what's actually inside that "international" fund in your portfolio? You might be surprised. For years, some of the top-performing international funds got a boost simply by holding 10-20% in US stocks. That's great when the US market is hot, but it can create unintentional overlap and gaps in your diversification. It's a good reminder that a product's name can be an incomplete (or even misleading) story. Are you confident you know what your investments are truly holding? Ever find yourself stuck in the 'active vs. passive' investing debate? We believe it's a false dichotomy. Even the act of choosing a plain-vanilla S&P 500 ETF is an active decision. You’re consciously choosing to ignore international stocks, bonds, or real estate. A truly diversified portfolio often includes elements of both: low-cost benchmark-tracking exposures alongside differentiators that may enhance the overall ownership experience. What's your take? Have you ever picked an investment based on its flashy 5 or 10-year track record? It's a common move, but it can hide the full story. A fund might look great on paper today because of a single stellar year that happened almost a decade ago, while the last few years were just average.

We believe a better approach is to look at performance more dynamically, like checking rolling returns over many different periods. This gives a clearer picture of consistency. What's your process for picking investments?

We often think of stocks as just numbers on a screen, but what if we reframed that? At their core, stocks represent ownership in the companies that produce the goods and services we all consume. When you own a piece of the means of production, rising prices (inflation) can feel very different. It’s a philosophical shift that turns investing from a spectator sport into active participation in the economy. Have you ever thought about your portfolio this way? Learn more about how this idea fits into our process at https://targetrockwealth.com/resources/.

The financial world often tells you that all investment fees are evil. We have a more nuanced view. Sometimes, paying a bit more for a specific, actively managed strategy can be a very thoughtful part of the plan, especially in less-traveled corners of the market.

It's just one part of the 'budget' we consider for risk, fees, and taxes when designing portfolios. Curious about our approach? Read the full story in our latest newsletter: https://targetrockwealth.com/resources/
