Feature Friday: Connecting Capital to Impact

This week, we’re highlighting TruFund’s Structured Lending and Investments team and the conversations helping advance its work.

Zihan Xiong, Vice President of Asset Management & Fund Administration, and Jacques Ben-Avie, Vice President of Impact Investment, spent three days at SOCAP connecting with potential funders and investees for the Impact Housing Developer’s Fund II.

Their conversations explored how investors direct capital to create meaningful change, how funders evaluate and measure impact, and where new opportunities for collaboration are emerging.

The team also shared TruFund’s work with peers across the impact investing community, gathering questions and perspectives that will help refine their approach and inform what comes next.

Before she helped entrepreneurs access capital, she watched her family build businesses without equitable access to it.

Dr. Kim Carter Evans’ grandfather began as a strawberry farmer in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, and later built a business picking up and delivering dry cleaning for people in his community. Her father built his own path as a State Farm insurance agent in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Their example inspired Kim to start her first business at just nine years old. Their experiences also helped shape the question that would guide her career: How can we make opportunity more accessible to the entrepreneurs who come next?

For Kim, that work carries a personal responsibility. Behind every business is someone’s vision for their family, their future, and the community they call home. Ensuring those entrepreneurs have access to capital and support means giving that vision room to grow.

That perspective is at the heart of her candidacy for the OFN Board of Directors. She brings a commitment rooted in lived experience and a belief that community finance can help change what is possible across generations.

A brighter ride. A bigger vision. A business bringing Baton Rouge together.

Through glow-in-the-dark bicycle tours, paint parties, and community wellness rides, Geaux Ride owner Charles creates opportunities for people to get moving, connect, and experience their city together.

Since 2022, TruFund has supported his journey through one-on-one mentorship, financial literacy and loan-readiness training, and connections to entrepreneurial development programs. Charles credits that support with strengthening his financial management, expanding his network, and helping him dream bigger.

For Dr. Kim Carter Evans, access to capital is personal.

She grew up watching her father and grandfather face inequitable access to opportunity. Later, as the owner of a successful trucking company, she navigated the lending process herself, receiving an SBA Community Advantage loan and experiencing firsthand what it takes to secure financing.

That experience shapes how she leads today. When developing a policy, designing a product, or improving a process, she considers the entrepreneur on the other side of the table.

Kim brings that same perspective to her candidacy for the Opportunity Finance Network Board of Directors: leadership grounded in lived experience, empathy, and a commitment to making capital work for the people who need it.

TruFund is proud to announce our certification as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s CDFI Fund. At a time when funding and policy uncertainty continue to shape the CDFI industry, this milestone holds particular meaning for our team.
