What a treat to get to spend the evening celebrating with one of my six favorite sister-in-laws! Though we live a couple minutes away from one another, it ONLY took for us to leave the country to get some 1-on-1 bonding time (and steal her daughter's party bag for chocolate and tattoos 😁) Thanks for embarking on this adventure with me! My children always demand to stay in the bathroom after their baths so they can watch the water make a "whirlpool" down the drain. I'm not going to lie - it's kind of fun to watch with them. However, anyone who knows me well knows that what I'm really doing is trying to figure out what the whirlpool is a metaphor...for. 😁

When I was in my early 20's I was hired by a real estate company to be an office manager. Within 2 months I was also their bookkeeper and event coordinator. While I learned new skills from the experience, it was not what I signed up for, and I was stretched too thin. What I was asked to do far exceeded what I had signed up to do, and the workload was suffering for it. I committed myself to having a singular focus so I could excel in what I do best.

Why did you hire (or want to hire) a bookkeeper?

A lot of business owners will say that they just don’t have the time or the means to do the financial work themselves, but what they’re really saying is that they’re looking for a new way to solve their financial problems. They’re looking for someone with a specific skill set who can tackle anything that comes up in a way that’s beyond someone with multiple skills.

So understanding WHY you chose to bring a bookkeeper onto your team is crucial in building that CEO-bookkeeper relationship.

Especially if it’s more than “I don’t like or have time for the work.”

Because if you’ve decided to bring them on as an enhancement to your business, you need to remember what that enhancement is you’re looking for. Is it risk reduction? Increase in profits? Strategy?

You determine the why and set that expectation from the start to alleviate any confusion.

Know what your expectation is, express your expectation - stick with it.
