An Evening Celebrating Love, Science & Legacy

What an extraordinary evening. Terri Orbuch and I had the pleasure of joining Dr. Justin Garcia, Executive Director of The Kinsey Institute, for the inaugural Helen Fisher Distinguished Lecture at The Explorers Club in New York City, an incredible evening celebrating the life, work, and legacy of my dear friend Dr. Helen Fisher.

We were also honored to spend time with Drs. John and Julie Gottman, who were featured for the inaugural lecture. Their groundbreaking work has transformed our understanding of love, relationships, and what makes partnerships last.

The evening was especially meaningful to me because Helen was such an important part of the Global Love Institute community. In 2019, The Global Love Institute honored Helen with our Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing her extraordinary contributions to the scientific understanding of love, attraction, and human connection.

To see her legacy celebrated by The Kinsey Institute, surrounded by people who have devoted their lives to understanding love and relationships, was incredibly special.

An evening I will always remember and a beautiful tribute to a woman whose work changed the way the world understands love.

Match and the Kinsey Institute have released the 15th annual Singles in America study. This year's study found that nearly half of singles (49%) have fallen for someone they weren't initially attracted to. Among those who keep an ideal partner checklist, 46% have fallen for someone who didn't fit it!

So what turns a first impression into something more? According to the study, great conversation, followed by shared interests and shared values, is the leading reason.

These findings show that clear standards can coexist with openness. Dr. Justin Garcia, Executive Director of the Kinsey Institute, said, "There's an interesting tension in the data. Singles today have clear expectations for a partner, but love still has the ability to surprise them."

Major dating apps are now adding AI features, including AI-powered matchmaker services and “wingmen.” However, relationship scientists explain why AI is unlikely to reliably predict who singles will actually connect with.

Attraction Has No Clear Pattern
AI is good at finding patterns in huge amounts of data. But it can only find a pattern if one really exists. Research conducted by Amanda Montoya, an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and her colleagues, based on 313 studies on similarity and attraction, found that being similar may help predict attraction before people meet. Once they interact, however, similarity has much less to do with whether they actually like each other.

Preferences Don’t Tell the Whole Story
People can list the qualities they want in a partner, but that doesn’t always predict who they will actually like. Social psychologist Amie Gordon from the University of Michigan cites speed-dating research showing that people’s stated preferences can become much less important once they meet and interact with someone in real life.

Chemistry Has No Clear Signal
Amie Gordon points out that AI is trained around ideas of what makes two people compatible, but researchers still don’t know which factors reliably define compatibility. In fact, relationship researchers still disagree on whether romantic connection can be predicted before two people meet.

As a conclusion, AI may help sort information and reduce the number of choices. But it still can’t reliably predict what will happen when two people meet. Attraction, chemistry, and human connection remain more important than AI when it comes to finding a successful match. What’s your opinion?
