We want to bring your attention to an uptick in spoofed caller ID scams that many community banks across Minnesota are seeing right now.

Several banks have reported fraudulent calls where scammers spoof the bank's phone number or name to appear legitimate. In these cases, customers believe they are speaking directly with their bank when they are not.

How the scam works:
Scammers manipulate caller ID to appear as a known community bank. Calls may reference real account activity, urgency, or "fraud prevention"

Customers are pressured to share sensitive information, such as:
PINs
Full account numbers
Online banking credentials

PLEASE KNOW THAT WE WILL NEVER CALL AND ASK YOU FOR THIS KIND OF INFORMATION! If you are ever unsure that you are actually talking to someone from the bank, hang up and call us back on the phone number you know is ours!

Using your credit or debit card to make a purchase is super convenient, but it can also leave you vulnerable to identity theft.

According to FICO (the folks behind your credit score), there were more than 1,700 incidents of skimming in 2024 that led to more than 230,000 identity theft incidents across the U.S.

Some of our financial crimes agents were out checking for skimmers at northern Minnesota gas pumps earlier this week. While you don’t have the same tools we do, there are things you can do to protect yourself:
• Use tap-to-pay: If available, this method avoids inserting or swiping your card.
• Credit over debit: If using a debit card, run it as a credit transaction to avoid entering your PIN.
• Check the pump: When paying for fuel, look for signs of tampering including a broken seal, loose keypad or parts that don’t match those on other pumps.

Pay attention during this Identity Theft Awareness Week and all year long to keep your identity safe!
