There has been an uptick in car thefts targeting Hyundai and Kia motor vehicles in the City of Rome and surrounding areas. These vehicles are being damaged and/or stolen because they lack certain anti-theft features, which makes them vulnerable to methods like ignition bypassing.
Here are a few steps that affected vehicle owners can take:
1. Visit Your Dealership: Hyundai and Kia are offering a free software upgrade for affected vehicles, which may help prevent theft. If you own one of the impacted models, contact your dealership to see if the upgrade is available for your vehicle.
2. Use a Steering Wheel Lock: Even with the software upgrade, itโs a good idea to use a visible steering wheel lock (like The Club) as an added deterrent. Criminals are less likely to target vehicles with additional visible security measures.
3. Spread the Word: If you know someone who owns a Hyundai or Kia, make sure theyโre aware of the issue and encourage them to take action.
