As the weather alert you received this morning alluded to, one of the risks of a fast thaw of all of this snow is flooding. A regular Homeowner's insurance policy does not cover "Flood" which is loosely defined as "surface/ground water coming from the outside of the house, into the house." A separate Flood policy would need to be purchased to cover damage caused by this Peril. There is often a waiting period of 15-30 days from the time coverage is purchased until it takes effect. Homes with basements have a higher risk of exposure to flooding. Flood insurance can be more affordable than you might think.
