Don’t wait until a hurricane warning has been issued to start preparing your business. It can take weeks or even months to plan, execute, and complete the actions that can help protect your business and help reduce the effects of a disaster. Now is the time to assess how prepared your business is to weather a hurricane. Here are some steps you can take to ensure that your business is prepared for the next storm:

- Inspect roof-mounted signs, equipment, guy wires, and supports to verify they are anchored and in good repair.

- Repair or replace any weak or damaged windows, door hinges, and latches.

- Establish a system to protect all windows and building openings

- Have generators or other means of emergency power available, test this equipment periodically, and ensure they are filled before a storm hits

- Keep floor drains and catch basins clear and check drainage pumps

- Establish a safe location for vehicles and equipment

- Make sure that your employee contact lists are current

Today is Day 3 of National Hurricane Preparedness Week and National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day!

When preparing for hurricane season, don’t forget to prepare for your non-human family members as well! If you are evacuating, do not leave your pet behind!

When you are assembling your disaster kit, make sure to assemble one for your pet as well. Make sure to include the following items in your pet’s disaster kit:

- Food

- Water

- Medicines and medical records

- Important documents (Adoption papers, vaccination and microchipping documents, etc.)

- First aid kit

- Collar with an ID tag, rabies, and leash

- Crate/pet carrier

- Sanitation (Litter, litterbox, newspaper, paper towels, doggie bags, household chlorine bleach)

- A photo of you and your pet (In case you get separated)

- Familiar items (Toys, treats, bedding, cat trees, etc.)
