When I talk with candidates about building a career in financial services, we spend a lot of time talking about the entrepreneurial side of the career - building a practice, developing a client base, and ultimately creating something that can grow because of the work they put into it.

But there is another question worth asking: What are you building that career on top of?

New York Life's financial stability is a hallmark of this 181-year-old company, and the commitments we make to our policy owners can extend to more than 60 years into the future. That requires a very different mindset than chasing the next market opportunity. Quality, diversification, risk management, and the ability to keep promises over decades have to come first.

Obviously, that matters to our policy owners. I think it should also matter to anyone deciding where they want to build a career.

If I'm going to ask someone to bet on themselves, build a business, and spend years earning the trust of individuals, families, and business owners, I want them backed by a company that takes its own long-term promises just as seriously.

If you're considering a career in financial services, I'd encourage you to read this article and ask yourself the same question:

What are you building your career on top of?

Some financial commitments last months. Others can last generations. When you make promises across those kinds of time horizons, the decisions you make today have to account for decades ahead.
