Weโre now enforcing speeds in construction zones on I-64 based on speeding data in local construction zones to help increase safety for construction workers and fellow drivers alike.
Speeding on I-64 is incredibly dangerous and unfortunately, has already proven deadly in our County. Weโve seen a number of increased accidents on I-64 alone during the construction from dangerous driving behavior, claiming the lives of multiple community members.
We take safety seriously in New Kent County, which is why weโre rolling out a vehicle based enforcement automated speed system that will help us provide a safer work zone on our larger construction project on I-64 for both workers and other drivers. There will be a securely monitored truck that has a LiDAR camera in the bed. This camera is able to monitor each lane of travel individually and with more accuracy that a traditional radar cone. That means that the LiDAR is measuring the speed of each vehicle individually and flagging those who are going 11+ MPH over the construction speed limit, not those safely following traffic laws.
On Tuesday, July 1st, we will start an initial warning period. During this warning period, violators will receive a warning in the mail marked in red advising of the violation that occurred on such date and time. Warning violations serve as a reminder to slow down in our construction zone and carry no monetary implications. After that, summonses will be issued to drivers violating work zone speed limits.
We encourage everyone to slow down, save a life wherever youโre traveling to. We are committed to changing driver behavior, slowing speeders down, and protecting our everyone in community - whether theyโre workers or drivers. Please drive safely in our construction zones and in our community. Working together, we can achieve our goal of ZERO: zero crashes, zero injuries, and zero endangered lives.
