🏠 Admitted vs. Non-Admitted Homeowners Insurance: What's the Difference?
With the changes in Louisiana's homeowners insurance market, you may hear the terms "admitted" and "non-admitted" when discussing insurance options.
So, what's the difference?
Admitted Insurance Companies
An admitted insurer is licensed and authorized to conduct insurance business in Louisiana and is regulated by the Louisiana Department of Insurance.
Non-Admitted / Surplus Lines Insurance Companies
A non-admitted insurer is not licensed in Louisiana in the same manner as an admitted insurer. Surplus lines insurers can provide coverage for certain risks that may be difficult to place in the standard market and generally have more flexibility in how they accept, price and design coverage.
One important difference for Louisiana consumers is that surplus lines policies are not covered by the Louisiana Insurance Guaranty Association (LIGA) in the event of insurer insolvency.
That doesn't mean one type of insurer is automatically right or wrong for every homeowner. The appropriate option can depend on the property, the risk, the available markets and the terms of the individual policy.
When comparing homeowners insurance, don't look at premium alone. Consider the policy terms, coverage, deductibles, exclusions, insurer and financial considerations involved with each option.
