My coworkers and I received the following message from our agency owner, Kathy Jordan: Allstate Insurance, today. I cannot express how thankful I am to work for this company and be a part of a team that recognizes what's important and doesn't shy away from what we believe in.
"Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.
I am happy and proud to announce that Allstate Corporation announced yesterday that June 19th will now be an official company holiday. We will now add this day to our short list of days of closure, and I will add this as a paid holiday for all fulltime staff of our agency.
Through tragic circumstances, the consciousness in our country is reaching new heights on this ever important quest for equality, and Allstate is now embracing this day that marks the freedom of enslaved people in our country. I ask that we all take this day as a moment to pause and reflect on the value of freedom and human rights for all as we search to give that freedom greater meaning by ensuring that the color of our skin has no bearing on how we treat one another.
Make no mistake, this is a massive financial commitment for the company, and significant to me as an agency owner in a smaller way, but this is a very small measure to show support for a non-negotiable culture of equal opportunity and recognition that peace in our country and our hearts comes only through true harmony across all races and ethnicities.
Cheers to you on June 19th as we celebrate freedom for all!"
