The temporary enhancements to ACA subsidies are scheduled to end after 2025. If that happens, the rules will return to the old income limits, meaning subsidies will only be available if your income stays below roughly $62,600 for a single person or $84,600 for a couple. Even if you remain under these limits, the amount of financial help you receive may shrink, which could lead to higher premiums. For Wisconsin residents in particular, the loss of enhanced subsidies may result in noticeable increases.

If you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed as open enrollment begins, here is some information that might help you choose a plan.

Congress is debating whether to extend the extra ACA subsidies that keep premiums affordable. Without action, these subsidies end in 2025, bringing back the old “subsidy cliff” and big premium hikes in 2026. A new bipartisan bill would extend the help for one more year.

It’s the latest sign the GOP sees political peril in letting enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits expire at the year’s end.
