India says it will still export wheat to food-deficit countries

The Indian government said Monday it will keep the window open for wheat exports to food-deficit countries at government levels, despite restrictions announced two days ago.
Indian Commerce Minister B.V.R. Subrahmanyam told reporters that the government will also allow private companies to fulfill their previous commitment to export nearly 4.3 million tons of wheat by July. India exported 1 million tons of wheat in April.
India mainly exported wheat to neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. India's Foreign Trade Board said in an announcement in the government gazette on Friday that soaring global wheat prices are threatening the food security of India and its neighbors and vulnerable countries. One of the main objectives of the export restrictions is to control rising domestic prices. Global wheat prices have risen by more than 40 percent since the beginning of this year

China benefits from sanctions against Russia

The week before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, China and Russia agreed to more than $20 billion in coal deals and $117.5 billion in oil and gas deals. China also lifted import restrictions on Russian wheat and barley after the war broke out. Just last week, the Chinese government announced the suspension of tariffs on imported coal starting in May. As Russian coal exports to EU member states are being phased out, this means that Russia, China's second largest coal importer, will benefit further.
