Medicare Advantage or Original Medicare? Let's break down what actually changes for you. 💙

Open Enrollment starts today, October 15, and runs through December 7, so this is the question of the season.

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) lets you see any doctor who accepts Medicare, nationwide, with no network restrictions.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is run through private insurance companies. It usually has a network, but often bundles in extras like dental, vision, or hearing.

With Original Medicare you will likely want a supplement (Medigap) to help cover the 20% it does not pay. Medicare Advantage typically has its own out of pocket max instead.

Neither one is "better." It depends on how often you travel, which doctors you want to keep, and what extra coverage matters to you. This is genuinely one of the most personal decisions in healthcare, and what works for your neighbor might be the wrong fit for you.

🙏😂 The Night-Before-AEP Prayer

Dear Lord,

It’s us again. Your friendly Medicare advisors. Tomorrow is October 15, and we have a few requests. 😅

Please grant us patience, strong coffee, functioning enrollment portals, and the ability to explain a deductible before we reach our own emotional maximum out of pocket.

May our provider directories be accurate, our clients’ prescriptions be covered, and our computers resist the urge to update at the exact moment we click “Submit.”

When someone describes their medication as “a little white pill,” please give us wisdom… and a clear photo of the bottle. 💊😂

When we hear, “But my neighbor gets $300 for groceries,” help us gently explain that their neighbor may have very different coverage—and possibly a very different understanding of it.

When we spend hours researching doctors, prescriptions, and benefits, please let the plan still be available when we’re finally ready to enroll.

And when a client says, “But the commercial said…” Lord, please take the wheel. 📺🤦‍♀️

When someone calls with “just one quick question,” help us remember that sometimes what they really need is reassurance—and give us the time and grace to offer it.

Please watch over the clients whose plans are ending. Help us guide them through the uncertainty and find coverage that fits their needs.

Keep our hearts kind, our explanations clear, and our sense of humor intact. Behind every appointment is a person counting on us, and we never want to lose sight of that. ❤️

Finally, when December 7 arrives, may our clients feel confident, our enrollments be confirmed, and our families still recognize us!

Got a letter saying your Medicare plan is ending next year? Here is what that actually means. 💙

It is called a service area reduction, or SAR. It means your insurance company is no longer offering that specific plan in your area for the coming year. It does not necessarily mean the company is leaving Medicare altogether, only that your plan is going away.

Your coverage will not automatically roll over, so you will need to choose new coverage for next year.

Here is the good news. A plan ending usually opens up options, including a special enrollment period and, in many cases, guaranteed issue rights.

Hang on to that letter. You may need it as proof.

Medicare Mayhem Monday: "Once I pick Medicare Advantage, I am stuck with it forever." 💙

Not true, and this one causes a lot of unnecessary panic.

You can apply to leave a Medicare Advantage plan and move to Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement. Here is the part people miss: depending on your situation, you may have to go through medical underwriting and answer health questions to qualify for that supplement.

If you pass, you can make the move. If you do not, you may be staying where you are for now. There are also situations where you have guaranteed issue rights, and underwriting does not apply at all.

So no, choosing Medicare Advantage is not a life sentence. But it is also not something to change on a whim.

Understand your options before you make a change, not after.
