Ask the bondsman to explain the agreement in plain language. What are you responsible for paying? Is collateral involved? What could happen if the person misses court or doesn’t follow the bond’s requirements? What steps would you need to take if your contact information or circumstances change?

Take time to read the paperwork and ask questions about anything that isn’t clear. The terms can vary, and signing because you feel pressured can leave you agreeing to something you didn’t fully understand.

Parenting a teenager can mean learning when to talk—and when to listen.

When a young person is dealing with a difficult situation, the first conversation may come out messy. They might be scared, angry, embarrassed, or worried about disappointing you. It can be tempting to jump straight to solutions, but sometimes the most helpful first step is making sure they know they can tell you the truth.

Try starting with: “I’m listening. Tell me what happened.” Then take a breath, get the facts, and work through the next step together. You can hold someone accountable and still treat them with care. You can set boundaries and still remind them that one hard moment does not define their whole future.

Parents: keep showing up, even when the conversation is uncomfortable. Teens: asking for help early is a sign of strength, not failure.

đź’™ **SOMETIMES THE BEST BAIL BOND ADVICE IS NOT TO POST THE BOND.**

I know that probably sounds strange coming from someone who makes a living getting people out of jail. But hear me out.

I recently had a conversation with a customer whose friend was sitting in jail, waiting to be sentenced in just THREE DAYS.

He wanted to get his friend out.

And I understood why.

When someone you care about is behind bars, three days can feel like an eternity. You want them home. You want to help. You want to do SOMETHING.

But I had to explain something he probably didn't want to hear.

**Spending money to get his friend out for potentially just a couple of days might not be the smartest financial decision.**

Depending on what happened at sentencing, his friend could be taken right back into custody.

And that bail bond premium? It's generally nonrefundable.

Now, could I have taken his money and written the bond? Possibly.

But just because I CAN write a bond doesn't mean I SHOULD encourage someone to spend money without understanding what comes next.

Here's something I wish more people understood about this industry.

**My job isn't just to get people out of jail. My job is to help families make informed decisions during some of the most stressful moments of their lives.**

Sometimes that means explaining the bonding process.

Sometimes it means helping someone understand their responsibilities as a cosigner.

And sometimes it means telling someone that posting a bond might not be worth the expense.

You don’t have to solve the whole situation in one phone call. Start with accurate information, write down what you’re told, and ask what the next step is. Before you agree to cosign or sign paperwork, take time to understand what you’re accepting and ask questions until the terms are clear.

A call saying “Pay right now or your loved one stays in jail” is a reason to pause—not panic.

Scammers know families are scared and looking for answers. They may pretend to be connected to a jail or bail company, share bits of real information, and pressure you to send money quickly. Before you pay anyone, verify where your loved one is, whether a bond has been set, and who is authorized to help with it.

Look up the bail company’s contact information yourself and call directly. Ask questions. Make sure you understand who you’re speaking with, what you’re paying, and how the payment will be handled. Be especially cautious if someone demands an unusual payment method or refuses to let you verify the details.

A real emergency still deserves a clear answer. Take a breath, verify first, and don’t let a stranger rush you into sending money.
