Community Scam Alert

The New Braunfels Police Department has been made aware that some local residents are receiving phone calls from a phone number that appears to be the Police Department’s non-emergency number (830-221-4100) and that the person calling is claiming to be a detective with NBPD.

Specifically, the caller claims that they are investigating bank fraud or other similar types of cases and is requesting that the potential victim provide them with bank account information over the phone. The caller may even claim to be helping the Attorney General’s office in an effort to gain private financial data from unsuspecting victims.

THIS IS A SCAM!

It’s important to note that scammers often target the elderly, but not exclusively, so everyone should remain aware when answering unsolicited phone calls. In the interest of keeping the public informed, NBPD wanted to make sure the community was aware of this scam before anyone else received a similar phone call. If you do receive this type of call, NBPD advises that you DO NOT reveal any personal or financial information and hang up immediately.

It should also be noted that there are a wide variety of phone scams, with scam artists constantly thinking up new ways to separate you from your hard-earned money. Beyond pretending to be law enforcement agencies, scammers can also pose as IRS agents, Publisher’s Clearinghouse employees, student loan agents, or credit card debt agents.

Please remember:
• If you didn’t initiate the phone call, be VERY wary.
• BE VERY CAREFUL about giving out personal information over the telephone, especially when the phone call was unsolicited.
• Legitimate businesses or government organizations will NEVER ask you to make a payment by purchasing gift cards or prepaid credit cards.
• BE WARY about letting anyone into your home or onto your property without proper identification, marked vehicles, etc., especially when that person shows up unannounced or unsolicited.
