Open enrollment isn't the only time you can get health insurance. A big life change can open a special enrollment window, usually 60 days from the event.

Things that commonly qualify: getting married, having a baby, losing other coverage, or moving to a new area. The tricky part is the clock. Wait too long and you may be stuck until the next open enrollment. If something big just happened in your life or a friend's, it's worth a quick call.

Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period opens tomorrow, October 15. Here's something that surprises people: if you do nothing, your plan usually just renews.

That means next year's premium, next year's drug list, and next year's doctor network, whatever they turn out to be. Maybe it's still a great fit. Maybe not. Either way, it's worth a look before December 7, and it's easier to do it early than in the last week.
