At eight years old, Matthew Nix was sweeping floors in his family's shop for $5 a Saturday. Today he leads it as President and CEO of Nix Companies Inc., the fifth generation of a 120-year-old welding business.

On Tuesday he brought that story and the lessons that came with it to the 2026 UofL Family Business Center Summit, where Axiom Financial Strategies Group was proud to serve as presenting sponsor.

He was joined afterward by Parker Huncilman of Huncilman Sheet Metal Fabrication and Lindsey Nix of Nix Companies, in a panel moderated by our Managing Partner, Vaughan Scott. Nix and Huncilman are both fifth-generation businesses, now partners — and the discussion focused on that partnership and how they've embraced change while honoring tradition.

One line stuck with us: a fool never learns from their mistakes, but a genius learns from the mistakes of others.

And that's the reason events like this matter — none of us have all the answers.

Our team enjoyed a wonderful morning at Coffee & Chat at NWSB New Washington State Bank Floyds K***s. We’re grateful to NWSB for hosting and creating a space to connect with familiar faces and meet new ones!

When talented people come together to achieve a common goal, they can accomplish what everyone else believed was unimaginable.

That was Pamela Whitten's closing reminder at the OneSI annual meeting yesterday at Plantation Hall at Huber's Orchard & Winery. IU's President pointed to the Hoosiers' national championship run as proof, then turned it back on the room — One Southern Indiana, she said, shares that same quality: talented people committed to a goal bigger than what any of them could reach alone.

Earlier in her keynote, she described a real shift at IU — rather than telling communities what they need, the university is now asking businesses across the state, "What challenges are you trying to solve?"

Proud to be part of a community already doing exactly what she described.

This summer, we had the pleasure of hosting four incredibly talented interns: Jacob, Ben, Nathan, and Casey. Over the past few months, they've brought fresh energy, sharp thinking, and genuine curiosity to our team — and we've loved every minute of it.

From day one, this group jumped in with both feet: asking great questions, tackling real projects, and making meaningful contributions along the way.

Thank you all for everything you brought to our team this summer. We're excited to see where your careers take you, and we have no doubt you'll do great things.

Cullen and Sawyer joined them on Saturday to cheer on Lou City FC. The squad beat Lexington SC 4-2 in a heated in-state rivalry!

He graduated from Indiana University in May with a degree in public financial management. Outside of work, he enjoys golfing, running, and spending time with family and friends.
