Using one widely cited 2025 analysis of average annual homeowners premiums for ~$300k dwelling / $1k deductible:

Most expensive states (highest average premiums)

Oklahoma – highest average premium in the country (≈$5.8k/yr).

Kansas & Nebraska – also near the top, with average premiums well above $4k–$5k/yr, reflecting Tornado Alley convective-storm risk.

Other consistently high-cost states across multiple sources: Louisiana, Florida, Texas, Colorado, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama.

Cheapest states (lowest average premiums)

Hawaii – lowest average HO premium nationally (≈$600–$650/yr) in the Insurance.com data (wind often carved out or separately rated).

New Hampshire & Vermont – also among the very lowest average premiums, generally well under $1,200/yr.

Other relatively low-cost states across sources: Oregon, Idaho, Wisconsin, Maine, Nevada, Maryland, Virginia.

The national average in these 2025 datasets is around $2,400–$2,600 per year for $300k dwelling coverage; states in the middle of the pack (roughly ranks 15–35) cluster around that band.

Missouri is middle of the pack but it sure feels like we are high priced. Though house insurance rates keep going up, it could be worse. Wind and hail has wreaked havoc all across the Midwest. As you can see from the average prices in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska.
