I sat down with a med device rep yesterday who makes $450,000 a year.

He’s done everything everyone told him to do.

Maxed out his pre-tax 401k every single year. Paid off his student loans. Been throwing extra payments at his mortgage. Even bought gold and silver because someone told him it was smart.

On paper, he’s crushed it. Over $1M saved.

But here’s the problem — almost all of it is locked up…

His 401k? Can’t touch it until he’s 59 1/2 without a penalty.

His home equity? Tied up in the walls of his house.

His gold and silver? Sitting in a drawer somewhere.

He just had his second kid. He wants to take his family on real vacations. He wants to feel like the money he’s earned is actually working for him TODAY, not just 30 years from now.

And for the first time, he realized that doing what everyone told him to do wasn’t wrong — it just wasn’t efficient.

He’s been building wealth in all the places he CAN’T access and almost nothing in the places he CAN.

This is the conversation I have almost every single week with high earners making $200k, $300k, $400k+. They’re not behind. They just need a better system that prioritizes liquidity so they can actually use their money while they’re still young enough to enjoy it.

If this sounds familiar, shoot me a DM ā€œWEALTHā€ and I’ll add you to the 2x weekly High Earner Money Playbook where I break it all down.

Call me crazy...

If you're 35 and earning $300,000, the last thing I would do is max out the 401(k).

I always default to thinking about the most successful people I know in my life. Not a single one of them got "rich" by maxing out their retirement accounts. They used capital to create additional lines of revenue and income.

Usually through the purchase of:

→ Business
→ Real Estate
→ Private Investments

All three of those things require a high level of liquidity.

Your 401(k) match is great. Contribute 4% or 5% and get your match. Think about contributing into Roth and not pre-tax. Roth at least you pay tax today and you can withdraw tax-free in retirement.

Here is what I would do if I was 35 earning $300,000:

→ Save 10% - $30,000 - into non-retirement brokerage (risk)
→ Save 5% - $15,000 - in cash & cash alternatives (no risk)
→ Save 5% - $15,000 - in Roth 401(k) to get employer match

I would create a cash flow system to save first.

Then increase my deductibles on my insurance (more savings).
Then refinance all debt to lower rates if applicable (more savings).
Then max out the HSA.
Then max out the Roth 401(k).

Thoughts?

Roses are red, violets are blue, beware, retirement is coming for you!

No one cares how much money you have at 65.

All you will care about is the income you have every year to spend.

Income is the outcome.

4%, interest only, living off your dividends, whatever you want to call it - that’s the typical retirement strategy.

→ It’s boring
→ It’s risky
→ It doesn’t always work

There are alternative strategies you can implement PRIOR to retirement that you won’t be able to set up online or do yourself.

Our clients don’t hire us just to manage their investments. They hire us to help them build a retirement strategy.

Big difference.

P.S. If you want to learn more about what this looks like, shoot me a DM.

Enjoy the snow! ā„ļø

I had the craziest nightmare last night 😵

I maxed out my pre-tax 401(k) and did nothing else…

Woke up at 55 with $5M locked in a retirement account I couldn’t touch.

→ Couldn’t buy the investment property
→ Couldn’t fund my kid’s business idea
→ Couldn’t do anything without a penalty and TAX

Just sitting there. Waiting until I was 59½ to use my own money.

Meanwhile, taxes kept climbing. Every withdrawal in retirement? Taxed as ordinary income.

I did ā€œeverything rightā€ and still got crushed.

Then I actually woke up…

This is the reality for so many high earners.

You’re maxing out the 401(k) because that’s what you’re told to do. It’s easy, automatic and it feels productive.

Nobody talks about what happens when 85% of your wealth is fully taxable with zero flexibility.

→ No tax-free growth
→ No liquidity
→ No options

The most successful people I know didn’t build wealth by locking up every dollar in a retirement account.

They kept liquidity. They built tax-free buckets. They created options and flexibility for their family.

Your 401(k) is a tool in the toolkit, not a strategy.

I break this down in my twice-a-week email called the High-Earner Money Playbook.

P.S. Comment or DM ā€œPLAYBOOKā€ and I’ll send you the link.

It’s crazy how expensive weddings are.

Carly and I have 8 weddings this year and 6 bachelor and bachelorette parties coming up.

Let’s do some conservative math:

→ $200 in gifts
→ $400 for one night in a hotel
→ $200 for travel, food, misc expenses

That’s $800 per wedding. Times 8 = $6,400…

Now the bachelor and bachelorette parties.

Easy $1,000 each if you’re being conservative. Times 6 = $6,000.

We’re looking at $12,000+ just to show up.

And that’s the MOST conservative estimate.

With social media, everyone’s trying to outdo each other.

Destinations are getting crazier. Expectations are higher. Nobody wants to be the one who doesn’t show up.

Every single one has been worth it.

The experiences, the memories, celebrating the people we love. I wouldn’t trade it.

You have to PLAN for it.

You can’t pull from your 401k or Roth IRA to fund a bachelor party in Nashville.

Carly and I have both implemented a cash flow strategy that all of our clients use.

We call it the wealth building account. It’s how we make sure we can say yes to the things that matter without going backwards.

Are weddings worth it?

Let me know in the comments.

P.S. I created a playbook on this exact cash flow strategy. Comment ā€œPLAYBOOKā€ and I’ll send it over.

I am excited to announce that I just completed my Chartered Special Needs Consultant (ChSNCĀ®) designation! 12 months of coursework following my CFPĀ® coursework and now onto the next.

My step-brother Jake has Autism. Working with my parents on his planning was my first glimpse into how complex this world is.

→ ABLE accounts
→ Special Needs Trusts
→ Funding strategies that don't disqualify your child from government benefits

If money is left outright to a special needs child, it's deemed as "resources" and can exclude them from state-provided benefits.

I've walked through this with my own family and have since helped other families in similar situations.

This one really hits home. If you know someone who may be interested in exploring special needs financial planning, send me a DM and I look forward to discussing further.

Crypto Curious?

I am - my family is, and my clients are.

It’s tough to find solid advice on whether to buy or sell.

Most of an advisor’s role is to help you understand risk, volatility, and most importantly, YOUR time horizon.

Traditional investment strategies rely on decades of historical returns. With Bitcoin (BTC), history is limited, ssand for most other cryptocurrencies, which were created within the last 5 years, it’s nearly nonexistent.

That said, there’s growing legislation and institutional support around BTC (not so much for other cryptocurrencies).

Be careful with what you read online. A quick Google search can lead investors down the wrong path.

If you’re crypto curious and wondering whether it fits into your portfolio, let’s talk!

This is not advice to buy or sell any form of cryptocurrency.

Are you prepared for unexpected challenges in your financial journey?

I’ve seen firsthand how vital it is to be prepared for life’s uncertainties, and taking a proactive approach with a robust financial safety net is often the difference between stress and success. Whether it's through disability insurance, a solid succession plan, emergency savings, or all three, these components are crucial for maintaining stability during tough times.

Here’s why a proactive approach matters:

Financial Safety Nets: Protects you and your business from unexpected events that could impact your income and operations
Succession Planning: Ensures your business can continue smoothly if something happens to you while also safeguarding your legacy and providing for your family
Emergency Savings: Buffers you and your business against unforeseen expenses, reducing stress during crises

Do you have a child or family member with a disability?

I know from experience that most families are so focused on managing daily challenges that future planning isn't part of the conversation. But it’s crucial to take a step back and plan—not just for yourself, but for your loved one with special needs.

Special Needs Financial Planning ensures your loved one can live a long, secure, and fulfilling life. Without comprehensive planning, your loved one's future can become uncertain, and vital government benefits they rely on could be at risk.

Effective planning involves setting up special needs trusts to protect the assets you set aside for them without affecting their eligibility for public benefits. It plans for their long-term care needs through comprehensive planning alongside permanent life insurance that will provide your loved one with financial support long after you're gone.

Through your planning, you can ensure your loved one will have the financial resources needed to maintain their quality of life, access necessary services, and achieve a sense of security and stability, no matter what life throws at them.

Are you taking steps today to secure their future?

🌟 Advanced Leadership Foundations Complete! 🌟

This week, I had the incredible opportunity to spend 3 days in Dallas wrapping up a 5-month Advanced Leadership course with Guardian Life and Park Avenue Securities. This was the first time this particular development course was run, and I’m grateful to have been part of it!

A huge thank you to Douglas Reiss, Seth Medalie, and The Bulfinch Group for nominating me to participate in this series. Your belief in my potential means a lot, and I’m excited to continue growing as a leader in the years to come.

The Advanced Leadership Foundations program builds on the foundations of leadership with key skills like recruiting, coaching, performance management, and FP learning and development. It has been an eye-opening experience, and I can’t wait to apply these new insights in my work moving forward.
