Nashville braces for record Labor Day traffic: Tips to dodge the gridlock
Nashville Tennessean
Nashville is predicted to have the highest increase in out-of-state drivers during Labor Day weekend.
The busiest travel times are expected between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., while the best times to travel are between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. or after 7 p.m.
Interstates 24, 40, 65, and 440, along with major corridors like West End and Charlotte avenues, are expected to be heavily congested.
Car breakdowns tend to increase the Tuesday following Labor Day weekend.
Nashville roads are poised to be among the busiest in the country during the Labor Day holiday weekend, new data shows.
According to a new report from Allstate, Nashville is projected to have the sharpest spike in out-of-state drivers between Aug. 28 and Sept. 3. Music City, Colorado Springs, Las Vegas, Austin and San Antonio, respectively, are set to have the busiest roadways in the U.S. during that time.
Heavily trafficked roads are likely to include interstates 24, 40, 65 and 440, as well as major corridors like West End and Charlotte avenues, the Broadway district downtown, and Hillsboro, Lebanon and Dickerson pikes.
Nashville roads won’t just see an influx of cars during Labor Day weekend — drivers’ behavior is expected to shift too.
“We see driving habits really change over Labor Day weekend,” Allstate Roadside President Brian Dieringer said. “You’ve got fewer drivers slamming on the breaks and more stepping on the gas, which is a clear sign people are trading the daily commute for a road trip.”
When are the best times to drive during Labor Day weekend?
As vacationers gear up to navigate long distances, Allstate recommends drivers travel between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m on Saturday, Aug. 30, Sunday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 1. For those who prefer driving at night, they suggest hitting the road after 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28 and Tuesday, Sept. 2.
Allstate also cautions that travelling between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. during the week-long holiday period could lead to heavy traffic and risky driving conditions.

Atlanta: I-85, I-75, I-20
Houston: I-10, I-45
Chicago: I-90, I-94
Philadelphia: I-95
Dallas: U.S. 75
Previously, car breakdowns have surged nearly 25% on the Tuesday after the holiday, the report states.
“Allstate Roadside sees a surge in calls the day after Labor Day,” Dieringer said. “It’s partly due to increased wear from holiday travel, but also from the fact that many repair shops are closed over the holiday weekend and the rush to get back to normal routines.”
Nashville did not land at the top of the list of cities prone to widespread holiday car troubles.
