Across the United States, the cost of car insurance is up 19% compared to a year ago, according to August’s Consumer Price Index report released on Wednesday. That’s the biggest annual increase since 1976.

This is from a year ago... but unfortunately as true today as ever. As rates continue to go up more than ever before, don't allow your agent to compromise your coverages just to save a few dollars. It never works out for the customer in the long run.

With insurance premiums continuing to rise; the frequent question is why?

Here are the 4 most common reasons why we are seeing premium increases now more so than ever...

* Storm activity – The Midwest has seen an unprecedented amount of storms over the last three years. Wisconsin has been greatly impacted by storm damage.

* Inflation – Costs of building materials and labor have gone up – it costs more to repair homes than it did in previous years. Inflation has also been a factor with auto repairs due to rising cost of replacement parts and repair costs of high-tech safety features in newer vehicles. As you are doing a coverage review, this would be a great time to have your agent update the replacement cost estimator to make sure Coverage limits are still accurate.

* Accident severity – Auto accident severity continues to trend upward, resulting in increased auto claim payouts.

* Supply chain and labor challenges – Building materials have increased in cost and are more difficult to obtain. Plus, with the labor shortage, the contractors and repair businesses need to pay their workers more, and they factor the cost of their hired labor into their bids.
