I've sat across from business owners making great money who couldn't cover payroll two weeks out.

Every time, the P&L looked fine.

However, the bank account told a different story.

That gap isn't a mystery — it's math.

Timing of receivables, timing of payables, and no reserve built to absorb the difference.

Most owners are managing profit and calling it cash flow management. They're not the same thing.

If you've ever looked at a "good" month and still felt like you were white-knuckling it to payroll, the problem isn't your revenue. It's your system for tracking what's actually available versus what's owed.

That's fixable, and it doesn't take a finance degree — it takes the right structure.

Today in Day 2 of our Summer Savings series, let's take a look at your current business expenses.

Many times, our cash drains away not from big purchases, but from little expenses such as unused subscriptions, forgotten purchases or other "under the radar" payments.

Take a minute to look over your credit card and bank statements to identify and eliminate these sneaky expenses

It's July. Halfway through the year is the perfect time to ask: are you on track, or just busy?

For women running e-commerce shops, coaching businesses, agencies, and service firms, summer can either be a quiet stretch or an all-hands-on-deck season — either way, it's easy to let the books slide when life is full.

But this is exactly the moment to carve out 30 minutes and look at where you actually stand.

Are you setting aside enough for taxes? Do you know your average monthly expenses?

Could you tell me right now what you paid yourself last month?

A mid-year check-in isn't about perfection. It's about catching small problems before they become big ones — so December doesn't come with a surprise that ruins your holidays.

Do you know which jobs are actually making you money?

Not every service call is created equal. That water heater install might look profitable on paper, but once you factor in drive time, callbacks, and materials — is it really?

Trades owners who track job costing stop guessing and start pricing with confidence. And when you price with confidence, you stop that quiet dread of "did I even make anything on that one?"

That confidence trickles down. It's the difference between saying yes to your kid's travel team fees without flinching, and doing math in your head at the dinner table.

Know your numbers, job by job. It changes everything.

You had your best month ever in sales... so why does your bank account say otherwise?

This is the #1 thing that trips up plumbers, electricians, and HVAC owners: being busy and being profitable are two different things. You can run calls back to back and still not have enough to cover payroll, or take your family on the trip you promised.

Your books tell you the truth your calendar can't. When you know your real numbers, you know what you can actually afford — for the business AND for your family.

That's the whole point of keeping clean books: not just so the IRS is happy, but so you can breathe.

Every day I try to do 3 things I don't want to do. Working out is typically 1 of my 3.

Even after all of the workouts I've done, I never "feel" like working out.

But Saturday, Billy and I tackled 1 of the 3 things.

We walked and jogged a 10K.

I'll most remember the moment right before crossing the finish line.

I don't normally jog 6 miles, so at the end of the race, both of my calf muscles just cramped in protest.

But I kept on going.

Why? I could see the finish line.

I decided to lean into the hard, lean into the challenge. The challenge I KNEW I would overcome by not stopping.

So, with calves cramping I crossed the finish line.

Am I still sore today, on Monday?

You bet!

Why do I challenge myself to do hard things?

Because I don't grow when things are easy.

Whether life, business or working out, everything worth accomplishing in life takes hard work.

What hard are you challenging yourself to today?

As a small business owner, we are always trying to watch our expenses.

But it's also necessary to make investments in our business when there is a clear payoff.

Having clean, updated financials allows you to:
save time not doing it yourself
see where your money is going (and how your revenue is growing or declining)
your cash flow position so you can plan
see your cash "runway" and what you need to do now to plan for the rest of 2026 and into 2027

The most successful business owners always have an eye on the future, and have the data available to them NOW to make decisions about TOMORROW.

Make the investment with a true professional that delivers clean and clear books with a customized touch.
