I want to tell you about a phone call I'll never forget.
Rita McRay had written a policy on a middle aged man about a year ago. He thought he was healthy. His doctors thought he was healthy. He was approved immediately...no issues, no red flags. A brand new policy.
He made two monthly payments.
Then he dropped dead on the floor from a heart attack. No warning. No goodbye.
A little while later my phone rang. It was his son, the beneficiary on the policy. He had gone to the refrigerator looking for something and seen a magnet we had sent his father when the policy was placed.
Our name. Our number. Right there when he needed it most.
When I answered, he was weeping. I didn't rush him to a claim form. I didn't open with policy numbers. I listened to him. I let him grieve for a minute with someone who picked up the phone and actually cared.
Then I told him I was going to stay with him through every step of what came next.
Rita and I added the insurance company to the call. We told them we had a beneficiary on the line and that we as his agents were there to help him make the death claim for his father. We walked through it together.
When it was finished, my wife and I stayed on the phone with him. We asked if we could pray for him and his family. He wanted us to do that, so we did it right then and there.
His father had paid two monthly premiums.
The death benefit was $25,000.
That's what this work is. That's what it can be when the right person is doing it.
This isn't insurance. This is ministry with a license.
