FAYETTEVILLE POLICE INVESTIGATE MURDER-SUICIDE

Fayetteville police are investigating a murder-suicide that took place this morning on Miller Avenue.
Family members tell WRAL the two people who died are 20-year-old Michael Culpepper and 25-year-old Xamegga Whitfield. The families say they were a couple who live together in the apartment on Miller Avenue where the incident happened.
Police were called to the home this morning around 7:30 after a report of shots being fired in the area. When they arrived... they found Culpepper outside the residence with a gun pointed at his head. When police approached... investigators say he shot himself. Culpepper was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he died from his wound.
Police say the video from a neighbor’s security camera that shows Culpepper shot Whitfield outside, then she ran ba k in the apartment to get away. When police went inside, they found Whitfield had been shot. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was an emotional scene when families arrived and received the bad news.
The gunshots were heard just a block away by the SRO at Ireland Drive Middle School. That school... along with Douglas Byrd Middle and High Schools were put on code yellow lock down as a precaution.
Right now... family members and law enforcement have the daunting task of figuring out what lead to this tragedy and if anything could have been done to stop it.
