To all the those looking for a job… there is hope. I know it is a very challenging job market. You feel that you have put in the work at school, taken all the harder classes, did 3 great summer internships and no one is responding back to you when you apply for a job. I will not sugar coat it, this is a hard job market.
But don’t lose hope. We need you. I know if feels like no one cares and no one wants to give you a chance. I want to tell you a story.
I was 24 years old. I was a high school teacher (and not the best teacher). I wanted to be good at it, as it was one of the most important jobs teaching the next generation, but I just wasn’t very good at it. My father in law told me to come interview at his very successful company in a sales position. He set me up with a great human and my future boss- Jim Getz for an interview. Jim was kind but told me that I was not ready to be on his sales team. He left me with a life long lesson that I carry with me today.
His most successful sales guy got the job by sending Jim a shoe box with one shoe in it and a note attached “Just trying to get my foot in the door”. Jim told me he got the box with one shoe and immediately called up the prospective employee and scheduled an interview with him. During the interview the candidate was well prepared on the company and competitors strengths and weaknesses and even brought Jim the other shoe so he had a pair of shoes. Needless to say, he got the job. As Jim told me this story in my interview , I realized that my interview lacked creativity. What was I bringing to the interview? At that point, I committed to myself that my job was to stand out and show people I wanted the job or wanted their business. I needed to be different and needed to show people I wanted it. I did not get the sales job I wanted but Jim was kind enough to put me in the basement training program in his sales department. And it was there I learned to grind, to work deep into the night and wake up early in the morning, to work on my presentation skills in front of the bathroom mirror while holding our newborn daughter. I vowed from that day forward that I would “get my foot in the door” by being creative and working harder than everyone else.
To you all looking for a job in this challenging market I say to you be creative, be different. Reach out in more ways than applying for a job or sending your resume into HR. People want to work with creative and unique people who care. Note… you will get rejected a lot doing this. So make sure you have thick skin. But just know that there is someone out ther who wants someone who will do something different to get the job because they know you will do something different to get that next sale.
Get your foot in the door! (And thank you Jim Getz for teaching me that hard work is a gift).
