How well do you know Medicare? Let's look at some fun facts and see...

Medicare is a federal health insurance program that was established in 1965 to provide health coverage for older Americans

It was created by President Lyndon B. Johnson when he signed the Medicare and Medicaid Act into law on July 30, 1965. The program was established as Title XVIII of the Social Security Act.

The original Medicare program included two parts: Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance). Part A was the primary benefit and automatically enrolled eligible beneficiaries. Part B was optional, supplementary insurance for physician services.

Over the years, Congress has expanded Medicare to include more people and offer more benefits. For example, (in 1972) Medicare was expanded to include people with disabilities, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and people 65 or older who choose Medicare coverage.

And in 1997, Medicare offered Part C health care options while in 2000, The Medicare and Medicaid and State Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Benefits Improvement and Protection Act waived the 24-month waiting period for people with ALS who are eligible for Social Security disability benefits.



Today, Medicare is generally for people 65 or older, but some people under 65 may be eligible if they have a disability, ESRD, or ALS.
