This year's Ruff Ruck Challenge starts with one simple thing. A leash in your hand and a shelter dog who needs to get out and be seen.

On June 27 we are hosting a Rescue Ruck, a Mini Ruff Ruck, at Big Lake Humane Society in Muskegon. Big Lake is opening their doors and their kennels, and the rest is easy. You walk a dog. The dog has a great morning. So do you.

This is where the season starts, and the morning where this year's crew first comes together to meet the dogs and talk about the event. If you have been interested in volunteering at this years Ruff Ruck, come game plan with us to see where we might need some help this year.

No experience needed. No big commitment. Just good people, good dogs, and a fun morning.

There is a documentary being made about this work called A Life Worth Rescuing, and the people who show up now are part of the story from the very start.

We want to introduce you all to someone really special. Her name is Janet, and she just turned 97 years old.

Janet is close friends with Becky, one of our agents here at 1st Assured Bail Bonds. Janet thinks what we do is just about the coolest thing on the planet, so she started riding along with Becky on bond calls. Becky heads inside the jails to post bonds while Janet waits in the car, soaking it all in. She loves every minute of it.

The fact that she wanted to be a part of what we do made our whole team want to show her some appreciation right back. So we started calling her Agent Janet, and for her 97th birthday we had a few custom 1st Assured Bail Bonds outfits made for her to make it official.

We wish all of you could have seen her. Every single gift she opened, she lit up and let out the biggest excited yell you've ever heard. She could not stop smiling (and neither could we).

Janet is one of the most adorable ladies our team has ever had the privilege of meeting, and getting to celebrate her like this is something none of us are going to forget, especially just how happy it made her.

We are requesting our communities help in identifying rehabilitation, support, and reentry programs across West Michigan to connect with resources that defendants can access while out on bond.

The moment someone is first released on bond is a critical point. Accountability is immediate, consequences are real, and the involvement of friends, family, freedom, and future outcomes creates a rare opportunity for an open mind to alternative choices that could be potentially life changing.

Our intention is to build a structured referral network inside our company. Not as a condition of bond and not as a mandate, but as an option. A way to connect people with support before the court requires it.

We are specifically interested in programs and organizations in West Michigan, primarily Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa, Newaygo, Allegan, and Oceana Counties, that offer services such as:

• Substance abuse recovery including AA and NA
• Anger management or conflict resolution
• Faith based or community mentoring
• Employment readiness, trade training, or life skills programs
• Veteran support services
• Mental health counseling or peer support

The goal is to create a permanent internal system so our agents can responsibly refer clients to trusted resources at the time of release.

If you are involved with a program, work for one, volunteer with one, or know of a resource you trust, we would appreciate a point of contact or introduction.

Tonight, we will be presenting two scholarships to members of Venturer's who are in attendance, as lessons commence tomorrow.
