Retirement Tax Traps to Avoid in 2026
As someone who’s spent decades guiding clients through retirement and Medicare planning, I’ve seen how retirement can bring some unexpected tax surprises—especially as we look ahead to 2026. Required minimum distributions may push you into higher tax brackets, your Social Security benefits could become more taxable, and Medicare surcharges or phased-out deductions might sneak up on you. Don’t overlook capital gains taxes and the impact of depreciation recapture, either. Multi-year income planning is essential to help you keep more of what you’ve earned. With the right strategy, you can sidestep these common pitfalls and enjoy a more secure retirement.

What Career Growth Looks Like in Disability Insurance
Having spent decades in the insurance field, I’ve witnessed firsthand how a career in disability insurance can evolve. Most professionals start out in entry-level positions, learning the ropes and building a solid foundation. Over time, growth comes through taking on more complex responsibilities—moving into roles focused on risk assessment, policy design, and eventually leadership. What sets successful individuals apart in this area is a commitment to earning industry certifications, developing technical know-how, and, perhaps most importantly, staying adaptable as regulations and technology shift. In my years at LaPiere Insurance Group, the importance of ongoing education and flexibility has been a constant—the key to not only advancing a career, but also providing clients with the sound guidance they deserve.

Medigap vs. Medicare Open Enrollment: Key Differences
As someone who’s guided clients through Medicare choices for decades, I often get asked about the differences between Medicare open enrollment and Medigap policies. Here’s what’s important to know: Medicare open enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7, giving you the opportunity to make changes to your Medicare plan—whether that’s switching from original Medicare to Medicare Advantage or vice versa. Medigap, on the other hand, is a different layer of protection. These policies help cover out-of-pocket costs that original Medicare doesn’t, but you can only enroll in Medigap during a six-month window after your Part B enrollment begins. Understanding these timeframes and coverage differences is essential for choosing the right protection for your health and your wallet. At LaPiere Insurance Group, I’ve seen how the right timing and plan selection can make all the difference for your peace of mind.

A $2.1M Portfolio, Two Very Different Tax Bills | Health Insurance and Medicare Made Easy
When it comes to retirement, having a $2.1M portfolio is a strong foundation—but as I’ve seen over decades of guiding clients through Medicare and retirement planning, the way you manage withdrawals can make all the difference when it comes to taxes and health care costs. Two retirees, each with the same $2.1M nest egg, could end up with very different tax burdens depending on how they structured withdrawals from taxable savings and traditional IRAs. For instance, a portfolio split between taxable accounts and a traditional IRA might generate about $117,400 per year. But asset location—where you hold which investments—plays a big role in both present efficiency and future tax exposure.

For couples filing jointly in 2026, keeping your MAGI at or below $218,000 keeps Medicare premiums standard. Even a single dollar above that can push Part B costs up by nearly $284, plus additional surcharges for Part D. If you pull from taxable accounts first, your IRA could grow, leading to larger required minimum distributions (RMDs) down the road. On the other hand, planning IRA withdrawals or Roth conversions before you hit RMD age may help reduce future tax and Medicare premium pressure.

As year-end approaches, it’s wise to model different RMD strategies, watch that any conversions stay below the next IRMAA bracket, and review your IRA for risks like floating-rate or concentrated holdings. Thoughtful planning today can help keep both your tax bill and Medicare costs in check tomorrow—a core part of the retirement and Medicare guidance I strive to provide every day.
