I can usually tell within 5 minutes of sitting down with a family whether they're going to feel calm in retirement... or blindsided by month three.

It almost always comes down to the same 6 things: income, healthcare, taxes, estate documents, spending, and how you'll actually spend your time.

One family I worked with had over $800,000 saved but no actual withdrawal plan. They were guessing every month. Once we built a real income order, the anxiety dropped almost immediately, even though the money itself never changed.

Money buys you the option to retire. It doesn't automatically buy you a good retirement. That's the difference this checklist is meant to close.

Ever wondered how retirees survive market crashes? The 4% rule, a strategy tested through the Great Depression and 2008, aims to provide a steady income. But does it hold up for *your* retirement? Let's explore what it really means, why it often works, and where it falters.

The 4% rule got retirees through the Great Depression, WWII, and the 2008 crash.

Here's how it works: pull out 4% of your savings the first year, then adjust for inflation each year after. Simple.

But there's a catch. The rule is built on averages. Your retirement isn't.

In my latest video, I break down 5 real reasons the 4% rule can fall short, including one that trips up more families than any other.

One family I work with learned this the hard way. Once their required withdrawals kicked in later in retirement, their income jumped higher than planned. We had to rework how they pulled money from different accounts to smooth it out.

The 4% rule is a great place to start. Just not a great place to stop.

Claiming Social Security at 62 can permanently reduce your checks by 30%. Waiting until 70 offers an 8% annual increase, locked in for life. One family realized they could wait and significantly boost their lifetime benefits.

Medicare isn't as simple as flipping a switch.

There are 4 parts: A, B, C, and D. And once you know those, you've really got two paths to choose from.

Path 1: Original Medicare + a Medigap policy. More flexibility, predictable costs, but usually higher premiums.

Path 2: Medicare Advantage. Lower premiums and extra perks like vision and dental, but you're stuck in a network.

Neither one is "right" or "wrong." It just depends on what matters most to you: flexibility or lower cost.

Did you know Medicare Part A covers more than just hospital stays? 🏥
Here's what it actually pays for:
✅ Inpatient hospital care
✅ Skilled nursing facility care
✅ Hospice care
✅ Home health care services
You qualify at 65 if you're entitled to Social Security or Railroad benefits. You can also qualify earlier if you're disabled and have received Social Security Disability for at least 2 years.
Good news: most people get Part A for free if they've worked and paid Medicare taxes for 10 years.
Understanding Medicare doesn't have to be complicated. Drop a comment if you have questions about your options.

I was talking with one of the families I work with recently, and they were surprised to learn their will wasn't going to control everything they thought it would.

Here's why. Money and property actually move in three different ways after you pass away, not just through your will. Some things skip the will completely and go straight to whoever's named on a form you signed years ago. Other things transfer automatically just because of how they're titled. And only what's left actually goes through your will.

The catch? If these don't line up with each other, the old form usually wins, even if it's not what you meant to happen.

Worth a few minutes to check who's actually named on your old accounts and policies.

Have you checked your beneficiary forms lately? You might be surprised what you find.

Understanding how your assets are distributed after you pass is crucial. Assets fall into three buckets: contracts with beneficiaries, joint ownership/trusts, and probate. Each has a different process, and knowing which is which can prevent unintended consequences for your family.

Nissan retiree or getting close to it? There's a benefit you'll want to know about before you turn 65: the N65 Stipend Plan.

Here's the gist. Once you hit 65, Nissan gives you a yearly stipend to help cover things like Medicare premiums, a supplement plan, and your vision, dental, and hearing coverage. But here's the catch, you have to stay on Nissan's insurance until 65 and enroll through VIA Benefits within 90 days of becoming eligible. Miss either one and the benefit is gone for good.

It's a solid benefit, but the rules are strict and unforgiving. If you're not 100% sure where you stand, let's talk before those deadlines catch you off guard. We work with a lot of Nissan retirees and would love to help.
