Too many people walk away right before the crop comes up. It's easy to walk away when success doesn't show up overnight, but that's usually when growth is just around the corner.

Sometimes You Just Need a Whiteboard and a Fresh Set of Eyes.

I met with a farm operation recently, and the goal of the first meeting was simple: understand the full financial picture.

We laid it all out, every note, every line of credit, every payment. Once we white boarded the debt at an aggregate level, we could clearly see the total annual obligations. Then we mapped out cash flow from each income source (and there were several).

It didn’t take long before reality set in. Things were tight.

Through that process, a lot of things became clear:

New equipment isn’t in the cards right now.

Fixing what’s already in the shed takes priority over upgrades.

And most importantly — awareness opened the door to change coupled with some tough conversations about long term sustainability of the operation.

Sometimes, even when you know your operation inside and out, bringing in a neutral sounding board can help uncover blind spots. That outside perspective can close gaps before they become real issues.

I wanted to take a minute to reintroduce myself and share a little about what I do.

My name’s Kyle Walls — I’m a first generation farm kid turned business consultant who still spends plenty of time in the barn, pasture, and boardroom. I’ve been fortunate to work across the agriculture industry, from seed and equipment to finance and strategy, helping farms and businesses find clarity when things get a little chaotic.

I’ve been in a lot of business meetings lately and I keep seeing the same thing.

There’s one big difference between businesses who are thriving and those who are just hanging on.

It’s a sense of urgency.

You can spot it just like you can tell who’s serious when the rodeo gate opens. Some ride, some hesitate. The ones who win don’t wait for perfect footing or ideal weather they nod their head, take the ride, and adjust on the fly.

Financial stress is real. If it goes unchecked it can sink even the strongest business.

This week I met with two new clients. One was staring down low yields and even lower commodity prices. The other was watching margins shrink on every product they sold. Both were stressed to the gills and struggling to see a way forward.

What they needed was not just another spreadsheet. They needed guidance, a plan, and someone to help steady the wheel. Together we made great strides to put their ships on the right heading.
