As we are in the season for storms, I thought it was a good time for a reminder. Most policies state that you (the insured) should notify your agent within 72 hours of discovery of crop damage. As a practical matter, you should always contact your agent immediately when you discover crop damage. Don’t wait!

I want to remind our producers that it is super important to contact your agent BEFORE you replant!!! It is important an adjuster talks to you before you replant! Planting is moving right along in southern Illinois in our area.

Also we may have some producers that are done planting, or if you are not - this is just a friendly reminder to get to the FSA office and get those acres certified asap so we can keep things moving along this planting season! Please certify your acres as soon as you are done planting and contact your agent.

REMINDER: Row crop farmers have until April 17 to apply for the Farmer Bridge Assistance (FBA) Program. Make an appointment with your local FSA office or apply online with a Login.gov account. Visit fsa.usda.gov/fba to create a Login.gov account.

It seems crazy to realize spring planting is right around the corner with the frigid temperatures today and the snow flying ❄️ .. BUT, we are approaching the plant dates for corn and soybeans for the 2026 growing season. For our region in southern Illinois, the plant dates for corn is April 1, and April 5 for soybeans. Now, if you have the buy-up supplemental policy called “Replant Option”, you can start planting as soon as today (only if you have Replant Option - check with your agent to see if you have this).

I also want to remind our producers that TODAY is the final day to sign up for crop insurance or make any changes to your current crop insurance policy you had in place for last year. We are seeing a lot of producers make changes due to the awful year we had last year, and the current drought monitor conditions that may impact this year’s growing season. We have also had a lot of interest in SCO and ECO this year. Reach out to your agent ASAP today if you wish to make any changes to this year’s growing season. Replant Option rates are still low this year, it’s a great time to take advantage of that.

I want to show everyone what a difference we at Allen Crop Insurance Agency make in what you pay in crop insurance premiums. We mapped fields today for a new producer who joined us. The picture on the left is what the FSA maps show the field is, 20.5 acres. This is what you will pay for if you have crop insurance with someone that does NOT map fields. The picture on the right shows what the actual, plantable field is cutting out areas that the farmer cannot plant in. The mapped field came to 17.2 acres. This is what the farmer ACTUALLY PLANTS. So he would be paying crop insurance for 3.3 additional acres on just this ONE FIELD if he hadn’t come to us. Imagine the difference on your entire farm that we can save you. THIS IS HOW WE SAVE YOU MONEY! We cut out waterways, telephone poles, cell phone towers, overgrown tree lines, etc. We provide this service to you for FREE, and you get a very nice map booklet with your mapped fields in it.
