Your change of value notice just arrived. Before you set it aside, take a look at the Senior and Persons with Disabilities Property Tax Exemption. The program has changed in a big way for 2027, and many more Skagit County homeowners now qualify.
Because of ESSB 6162, the top income limit in Skagit County rises from $48,000 to $78,000. On top of that:
A new standard deduction of $7,500 per person (up to $15,000) comes off your income before it is compared to that limit, so households earning more than $78,000 may still qualify.
Everyone who qualifies, at every level, will pay no school taxes. School taxes are typically the largest portion of a property tax bill.
Your home's taxable value is frozen at its assessed value as of January 1 of the first year you qualify.
Veterans now qualify with a 40 percent service connected disability rating, reduced from 80 percent, substituting for the age requirement.
There is no filing deadline, and you may apply for up to three prior years. Prior years are reviewed under the income limits and rules in effect at the time, which were lower before 2027, so if you qualified back then, you could receive a refund of taxes you already paid. If you looked at this program before and did not qualify, it is worth looking again for 2027.
Not sure if it's worth your time? Visit our exemption page and click "Check if you may qualify." Answer a few questions and the tool will tell you whether you may qualify, roughly what you could save, and which documents you'll need. It runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is collected, stored, or submitted.

When you're ready, you can apply online in English or Spanish right from the same page.
Please share this post. The people this program helps most are often the ones least likely to hear about it. If you have a parent, neighbor, or friend on a fixed income, pass it along.
