🐷 October is National Pork Month, and we're celebrating Iowa pork farmers all month long!

Pork production plays an important role in Iowa agriculture, and National Pork Month is a great opportunity to recognize the farm families who care for their animals every day and help provide a safe, wholesome food source for families across Iowa and beyond.

Each Wednesday in October, we'll post a pork trivia question or fun fact. Comment with your answer for a chance to win a $100 pork bundle!

Congratulations to our 2026 Century & Heritage Farm honorees!

🎉 Helphrey Family Farms of Winfield was recognized as a Century Farm, honoring more than 100 years of family ownership.

🎉 Scott and Stephanie White of Winfield received recognition as both a Century Farm and a Heritage Farm, celebrating over 150 years of continuous family ownership and stewardship of their farm.

These awards recognize Iowa farm families whose dedication, hard work, and commitment to caring for the land have been passed down through generations. Their stories reflect the strong agricultural heritage that continues to shape Henry County and rural Iowa.

Please join us in congratulating these outstanding farm families on this well-deserved honor!

Lincoln Elementary 1st graders recently discovered how agriculture connects to the foods they eat during their September Ag in the Classroom lesson, The Very Hungry Iowa Caterpillar.

Students enjoyed following the caterpillar's journey through Iowa-grown foods while learning that many of the fruits, vegetables, grains, and animal products they eat every day are produced by Iowa farmers. The lesson encouraged students to think about where their food comes from and helped them begin making connections between agriculture and their daily lives.

The Very Hungry Iowa Caterpillar is a great introduction to Ag in the Classroom and sets the stage for a year of learning about Iowa agriculture, food, and farming.

Miss Sarah recently visited Clark Elementary in New London for September Ag in the Classroom lessons!

Her first stop was with the 2nd grade classes, where students became detectives during the Source Search lesson. Together, they explored common products they use every day and uncovered where those items begin their journey. Students quickly learned that while stores and factories help get products into our hands, many goods originate on farms or from natural resources. Through hands-on activities and teamwork, they discovered just how connected agriculture is to their daily lives.

This visit was especially meaningful for Miss Sarah, as she has had the opportunity to work with this group of students every year since they were in kindergarten. It's always exciting to watch students grow and build on the agricultural concepts they've learned over the years!

Next, Miss Sarah joined the kindergarten classes as they became Farm Safety Detectives. Students learned what a hazard is and why safety is important both on and off the farm. They examined a farm safety scene, searching for potential dangers and discussing ways to stay safe around equipment, animals, and farm work areas.

The class also learned about Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) signs and why they are especially important this time of year as harvest equipment travels Iowa roads. Students put their new knowledge to the test by deciding which vehicles need an SMV sign and which do not.

As harvest season ramps up across Henry County, farmers will be spending long days in the field and moving equipment from farm to farm. Please watch for slow-moving vehicles, avoid risky passing, and give equipment plenty of room to make wide turns.

We're all sharing the same roads, and a little patience goes a long way toward keeping everyone safe this fall.
