Day 3: Hurricane Preparedness Series 🌪️
When a storm is forecast to impact our area, preparation shifts from planning to action. This is where the work you did earlier in the season — your supplies, your plan, your insurance checkup — really pays off.
Now it’s about acting early, not waiting until conditions get worse.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), once a storm is approaching, there are several critical steps to take right away:
🏠 Protect your home
Board up windows and secure exterior doors
Bring in or tie down outdoor furniture and loose items
Move vehicles to a safe location if not evacuating
Unplug appliances if flooding is possible
Shut off water, gas, and electricity if instructed
🐾 Plan where you will go (and include pets)
Identify shelters, hotels, or friends/family outside the impact zone
Remember: most public shelters do NOT allow pets (except service animals)
Know your backup options in case plans change quickly
🎒 Get your go-bag ready
Pack essentials for at least 3 days: clothes, water, food, hygiene items, chargers
Include medications, important documents, and pet supplies
Keep your phone charged and your vehicle fueled or charged
Make sure your written emergency plan is easy to grab
🤝 Check on others
Help neighbors, especially seniors or anyone who may need assistance
Share reliable updates so your community stays informed
Offer rides or help with preparation when possible
🚨 If evacuation orders are given — act immediately
Don’t wait for conditions to worsen. Leaving early is safer than trying to leave during the storm. If time allows, secure your home, notify someone of your plans, and assist neighbors if you can.
The key message today: when a storm is coming, speed matters. Preparation turns into action fast.
We’ll continue the series tomorrow with what to expect during and after a storm.
