Medicare annual enrollment period starts

Insurers will kick off the annual enrollment period for 2017 Medicare coverage October 15th

Consumers can sign up for Medicare Advantage health coverage or Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage from now through Dec. 7.

The average basic Medicare drug plan premium will be $32.50 per month, and the average Medicare Advantage plan premium will be $32.91, according to officials at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Insurers have complained about the effects of changes in Medicare program reimbursement levels and strategies on plan finances, but they continue to compete hard for private Medicare plan business.

Millions More May Be Eligible for Obamacare Help, U.S. Says
Millions of people in the U.S. may be missing out on funds available under Obamacare to help them afford health insurance, the federal government said, as the fourth sign-up season for the program approaches.
About 2.5 million people with individual or family insurance plans outside of Obamacare could be eligible for tax subsidies if they bought through the program, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services said in a report Tuesday. In addition, about 9 million people who are uninsured may be eligible for subsidies to help them buy plans, according to the report.
“Today’s data show millions more Americans could benefit,” HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said in a statement accompanying the report. Inside the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, as the 2010 law is formally known, there are about 9 million people getting subsidies.
The U.S. is pushing to get more people covered by the ACA, in part by emphasizing how subsidies can help make insurance more affordable despite rising premiums. The cost of individual plans for next year sold through the law’s markets will climb by about 25 percent on average, according to ACASignups.net, a site that tracks the law.
The analysis also shows how many individuals may feel the full effect of this year’s rate increases. About 6 million people are buying health plans in the individual market, either on- or off-exchange, and aren’t eligible for subsidies.
About 29 million people, or 9.1 percent of the population, lacked health insurance in 2015, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Head Lice Now Resistant to Common Meds in 25 States (including Wisconsin)
Prescription drugs are still effective, however

At least 25 states host lice populations that don't respond to common over-the-counter treatments, a new analysis reveals.

Permethrin, part of the pyrethroid class of insecticides, has long been the go-to weapon against head lice, mosquitoes, bedbugs and other insects.

But continued exposure to permethrin has caused a huge swath of the dreaded insects to develop genetic mutations that render such drugs useless.

It is important that you review your coverage each year to determine if your plan is right for you. The “4 Cs” are an easy way to compare your options.

Cost
The price of most plans will change from year to year, even if it’s only slightly. By reviewing your options each year, you can feel confident that you’re getting the coverage you need at the price that fits your budget. Compare all types of costs, including deductibles and premiums, copayments and coinsurance to see if there are major differences. Next, look at the maximum out-of-pocket expenses for each plan. Finally, take a look at your prescription drug costs and compare drug prices for the ones you need.

Coverage
It doesn’t matter what your plan costs are if the coverage isn’t what you need. Compare the coverage in each plan to make sure it’s right for you. Don’t be afraid to ask each provider specific questions. What services do you need the most? Has your health situation changed over the last year? Just because your plan worked for you last year doesn’t mean it’s the best option each year.

Convenience
You’ve likely built relationships with your doctor and pharmacy, since they play crucial roles in your health and wellbeing. Some plans may require you to change doctors or get your prescriptions from a different pharmacy. For most people, finding a plan that allows them to stay with their doctor and pharmacy is important.

If you aren’t particular, you may want to make sure that your plan includes doctors and pharmacies close to home.

Customer Service
Customer service may not seem as important as the price or coverage of your insurance, but you don’t want to discover that your provider is difficult to deal with when you have an urgent problem. You could call each provider to determine how good their customer service is, but that would be tedious and inconclusive.

People with untreated hearing problems may be prone to depression.

Hearing loss patients who forgo wearing hearing aids are 50% more likely to develop depression or sadness, according to a study presented at the annual conference of the American Psychological Association. "Many hard of hearing people battle silently with their invisible hearing difficulties, straining to stay connected to the world around them, reluctant to seek help," researcher David Myers said. People with hearing problems wait an average of six years after developing signs of trouble before seeking help. Get Dental Hearing and Vision coverage all in one affordable plan.
